Chapter 96: Chapter 96 - Annoying Worm
At that moment, a thunderous sound of countless trees snapping echoed from the direction of the passage on the 51st floor.
Link immediately activated his Observation Haki to assess the situation, and his expression shifted to one of concern.
He stomped on the ground, leaving deep footprints as he dodged obstacles and sprinted toward the source of the noise.
Ais was already there, gripping her Sword of Desperate tightly, her face set in a serious expression.
Link's gaze fell upon a monstrous creature over six meters long.
A grotesque evolution of a worm!
His body was greenish-yellow with flat appendages resembling arms, but its overall shape was distinctly different.
It looked like a worm that had evolved into a humanoid form
Its swollen lower body remained unchanged while its upper body rose like a hill, featuring gentle curves reminiscent of human anatomy.
Several tube-like organs dangled from the back of its head like hair.
The skin was a chaotic mix of colors...
greenish-yellow with random splashes of paint-like hues
Extending even to its featureless face, which bore no eyes or mouth but had three-dimensional protrusions.
The round armor hanging from its chest resembled that of a woman, yet its abdomen was grotesquely swollen
Not in a nurturing way but rather as if it had overeaten excessively, taking on an ugly purple-black hue.
"Let's call it Worm Banshee," Link muttered under his breath, unable to hide his disgust.
His expression mirrored that of an old man on the subway staring at someone engrossed in their phone.
"It must have come from deeper levels," Ais replied gravely.
Behind them arrived Olga, Asagi, Finn, BeTE, and the Amazon sisters. Link glanced at Ais and drew out his Zanpakuto.
"Do you want to join me?"
Ais shook her head and readied her beloved sword instead.
Link smiled and prepared to strike, but the monster acted first.
Like a mother welcoming her children home from school, it spread its four arms wide like oars and lunged toward them.
Link raised an eyebrow and quickly swung his knife to create a wind wall. In an instant, small particles of colorful light erupted from the barrier like pollen before exploding outward.
The faces of everyone present were illuminated by the fiery blast.
"Tsk…"
Link clicked his tongue in distaste as he waved his knife at the monster.
The Worm Banshee attempted to block his attack with its four arms but ultimately lost them as Link's blade sliced through flesh with ease, inflicting massive wounds across its body.
A torrent of corrosive fluid gushed forth, corroding large patches of the gray forest around them.
"Ouaaghh!!!"
The monster let out a high-pitched wail in agony.
Yet astonishingly, its wounds began healing at an alarming rate right before their eyes.
Despite Link's relentless strikes aimed at critical areas, the creature skillfully avoided fatal blows while sustaining numerous injuries that continued to mend themselves.
As countless warty legs writhed beneath it, the Worm Banshee drew closer to their camp.
"We can't let it get any nearer!"
Link shouted as he charged forward.
Finn frowned and ordered urgently, "Notify everyone to prepare for retreat."
"But that monster—"
"Link will handle it," Finn interjected firmly.
"We need to prevent this battlefield from expanding; we must be ready."
As Link rushed toward the Worm Banshee again, its featureless face cracked open with a loud sound reminiscent of something splitting apart
The purple-black corrosive solution shot forth like water from a high-pressure hose aimed directly at him.
With nowhere else to go but forward and backed against their camp's ledge behind him, Link opened his eyes wide and slashed straight through the incoming spray.
"Everything in this world shall burn to ashes!"
"Release! Bankai!"
His body ignited with flames and wind as he propelled himself through the corrosive solution ahead. In an instant, he burst forth from the toxic mist!
The Banshee Worm screamed in rage as it crossed its arms defensively in an X shape before crashing down towards him with tremendous force! Its massive bulk slammed into the ground but missed him entirely; however, dust clouds erupted violently around him
Threatening to engulf him completely.
Yet instead of retreating or faltering under pressure
Link pressed onward through chaos itself until he reached the front lines once more where he faced off against this monstrous foe again!
The Worm Banshee attempted another push using one remaining arm...
But once more found itself severed by Link's blade!
"Ouaaagghghgh!!!"
It shrieked again in pain while trying desperately resist further attacks,
But Link had already locked onto its core!
"Boom! Boom! Boom!!!"
A series of colossal explosions erupted as flames surged upward; an extraordinary reaction occurred when those pollen-like light particles met fire, reating an immense fireball that formed into a dome sweeping away everything within reach!
Everyone instinctively shielded their eyes against both heat waves and shockwaves generated by such forceful blasts
The inferno rapidly spread throughout gray forest surrounding them turning everything crimson red!
Ais tightened her grip on her sword anxiously watching events unfold before her:
"LOR LINK!!"
Olga , Asagi ,and Celestine also gazed ahead worriedly while Tiona stared intently at him
Her cheeks flushed bright red due excitement building up inside…
Just then…
The sea of flames parted suddenly as if cut by some unseen force revealing a figure leaping forth unscathed!
With golden dragon tattoo emblazoned across one arm holding tightly onto long knife glistening brightly amidst chaos surrounding him
Link emerged looking remarkably handsome despite torn clothing revealing solid muscles beneath…
He strode confidently towards them clutching what appeared larger than average magic stone within palm
A vibrant greenish-yellow hue contrasting sharply against ordinary blue-violet stones they'd seen before…
The powerful swordsman returned triumphantly greeting everyone gathered nearby who erupted into cheers filled with admiration for their hero!
…
"Oh come on! We could have kept exploring; I wasn't even finished yet!"
Tiona complained petulantly.
"You're being annoying; please calm down," came Tione's exasperated response.
"But we only made it to Floor 51 before turning back…" Tiona pouted lowly.
"Are you questioning our leader's decision?!"
Tione shot back at her sister who was still covered in remnants from battle earlier
Tiona chose instead focus elsewhere though still pouting adorably enough anyone could see how much she wanted continue adventuring further down below…
Tione sighed heavily knowing full well what lay ahead:
"The leader has explained multiple times now. we encountered too many worm monsters this time around; even though we brought spare weapons along remaining supplies simply aren't sufficient enough if we push deeper."
Tiona remained sullen yet selectively deaf regarding warnings given earlier:
"You don't want end up fighting those monsters barehanded on way back do you?"
"It's fine... I understand," she relented finally though disappointment lingered heavily within heart still feeling frustrated after working hard just reach Floor 51 only find themselves forced retreating now instead…
Like Tiona herself morale among clan members dipped considerably especially lower-ranking ones who hadn't played significant roles during expedition
They wore expressions reflecting exhaustion clearly visible etched across faces all around them…
