Chaos Wanderer

Chapter 5: The Hunt

The air in the cave felt colder, thicker, as the group stood staring at the strange, herbivore-like creatures before them. The creatures, hunched and low to the ground, continued feeding on the dark, twisted plants that somehow survived in the impossible conditions. Their small, beady eyes flickered occasionally toward the group, but they seemed mostly unaware of the humans lurking nearby.

The conversation had gone in circles for a while now, each suggestion more bizarre than the last. Some had proposed they wait, keep exploring, or maybe even try to find a safe place to sleep. But it was clear that something had to be done—and fast.

"Alright," Lumien said, breaking the silence with an almost resigned tone. "We're all agreed, right? Someone needs to go for it."

"You mean—" Isla's voice faltered as she glanced nervously at the creatures. "Actually go hunt one of them?"

"That's what we've got," Chris replied, his tone calm as usual. "We've got nothing else, and we're running low on resources."

Jasmine looked at Elijah, a grin playing on her lips. "So, Elijah," she said lightly, "you're the only one here who's actually looking fine. I think you're our man."

Elijah turned his head, meeting her gaze. His expression was unreadable, but his lips twitched slightly. "You want me to hunt a creature that looks like it belongs in some freaky dark fairy tale?

"Alright, sure," he said with a shrug, as though the task was no more challenging than picking up a snack from the store.

The others stared at him in disbelief.

"You're serious?" Mia asked, her voice a mix of disbelief and awe.

"Come on, it's not like I have anything better to do," Elijah replied. He took a few steps forward, heading straight toward the creatures without hesitation.

A few of the others exchanged glances but quickly nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you've got this," Jasmine said, her tone playful yet laced with confidence.

Just as Elijah moved to hunt, Ava caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of her eye. She approached the familiar object and was stunned to find a diary similar to the previous one. Returning to the group with an expectant look, she brought their attention to it, speaking in a low but excited voice to avoid alerting the creatures.

Merry hurriedly approached Ava when she saw the diary and asked, "Is that another one?" The group followed, completely forgetting about Elijah, who was still heading toward the creature.

Merry took the diary and opened it to a random page. As soon as she did, she slammed the book shut and threw it to Chris with a startled gasp. The group stared at her, confused and alarmed by her frightened reaction.

Without skipping a beat, Chris opened the diary and turned to the same page. Merry spoke in a frightened whisper, "It's written with..."

"Blood," Chris finished grimly.

The others' faces paled. Lumien took a deep breath to calm himself before asking, "What does it say?"

Chris started reading aloud. "Note yourself: Do not approach the hunched creatures."

The group exchanged uneasy looks, then slowly and simultaneously turned their heads to glance at Elijah, who had been forgotten in the midst of the discovery.

"Should we...?" Allen asked, his eyes fixed on Elijah, clearly unsure whether they should stop him.

"No," Jasmine replied, tilting her head with an innocent smile. "He's got this."

The group watched with bated breath as Elijah approached the creatures. The smaller ones scattered, but the leader—larger and more imposing—remained still, its beady black eyes fixed on Elijah. Its spindly body swayed slightly as it turned its attention toward the approaching human.

Elijah, seemingly unaware—or perhaps just unfazed—continued walking, his hands relaxed at his sides, his expression neutral. He came closer and closer, until he was directly in front of the creature.

And then it happened.

The creature's eyes widened, and for the briefest moment, it hesitated. The group could see it shift its stance, then—snap—its mouth opened. Its lower jaw split into two parts with a sickening sound, revealing rows of jagged teeth and fangs. The group froze.

The air vibrated with tension. Elijah's gaze flicked from the creature's open mouth to his friends, and his expression suddenly shifted into one of mock betrayal, as if he was just realizing how much of a mistake this had been.

Chloe turned to Jasmine, her gaze full of judgment. "You were saying?"

Jasmine didn't respond. She just continued watching Elijah, her eyes full of concern. While she didn't like Elijah much, she didn't hate him either—and she definitely didn't want to see him get hurt.

Elijah muttered something dryly under his breath, before ducking out of the way just as the creature lunged toward him.

A loud, guttural growl came from the creature as it moved faster than anyone expected, charging at Elijah with alarming speed. But Elijah was quicker. With a fluid movement that left the group wide-eyed, he dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the snapping jaws of the creature. He barely had time to recover before the creature charged again, even more fiercely.

With a sharp movement, Elijah grabbed a large stone from the ground and threw it directly into the creature's face. It howled, staggering back for a moment. That's when Elijah made his move. He leapt forward, catching the creature off guard, and in one swift motion, plunged a sharp rock into the soft underbelly of the beast.

The creature screeched, its massive jaws snapping wildly as it tried to fight back, but Elijah's grip was unyielding. He twisted the rock deeper, and the creature let out a final, desperate shriek before falling still.

The group watched in stunned silence as Elijah stood over the creature's fallen body, breathing heavily. His eyes were narrowed, his posture tense—but there was no sign of victory or exhilaration. He simply wiped his brow and glanced at his friends.

His gaze deadpan, he said flatly, "The next time you send me to hunt something, make sure it doesn't look like a nightmare crossed with a bear on steroids."

The group collectively let out a dry, nervous laugh, the tension slowly melting away as they processed the absurdity of it all.

"No big deal," Chris muttered, still processing the bizarre scene. "Just another Tuesday, right?"

Elijah threw the creature's lifeless body over his shoulder with ease, walking back toward the group. His expression was unamused, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—maybe a brief hint of pride, or just the satisfaction of a job well done.

As he reached them, he dropped the body unceremoniously at their feet. The group stared at it for a moment, taking in the bizarre form of the creature, still processing the fight they had just witnessed. But Elijah, as usual, was unfazed.

"So," he said, looking at them all, "what now?"

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. "Are we even sure this thing is edible?"

"Only one way to find out," Yusuf said.

Chloe countered, "So we're just supposed to cook and eat this thing and pray we don't die of food poisoning?"

Ava chimed in, "Wasn't this creature mentioned in the second diary? Maybe we can find something useful."

"A second diary? You found another one?" Elijah asked, grabbing the diary from Chris. He flipped straight to the same page marked in red: Note yourself: Do not approach the hunched creatures.

He raised his head, looking at his friends. They all wore guilty expressions.

"Let's just move on and pretend nothing weird happened here," Elijah said, tossing the diary aside. "I'm not carrying that thing back, though."

The group exchanged dry chuckles, the weight of the moment lifting—if only slightly. The reality of their situation hadn't changed, but in that small moment of triumph—however bizarre—it felt like they might have a chance
