Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 320 - The Alien Son-in-Law

After dropping off the rescued survivors at the B City base, Ruo Manni parked the RV and ensured her team, including Hua Deli and the others, could focus on training. Only then did she head to the Lin family home.

Lin Kexin harbored nothing but resentment for Hua Deli and refused to acknowledge any familial bond with him. Ruo Manni decided not to force the issue.

Initially, she planned to remind Hebrew Adam not to disclose Hua Deli’s relationship with Lin Kexin. However, before she could bring it up, Hebrew Adam solemnly told her not to mention the matter to anyone else.

Hua Deli, on the other hand, found Ruo Manni’s behavior increasingly perplexing since her arrival in this world. Her actions were often inexplicable. The fact that she had grown so close to the Lin family, especially the base leader’s family, made him suspect there was a significant secret behind it all.

However, Ruo Manni refused to reveal anything, and Hebrew Adam, who seemed to know the truth, remained silent. When Hua Deli asked her directly, Ruo Manni admitted frankly that she had to keep someone else’s secret and couldn’t say more. Satisfied with her honesty, he didn’t press further.

He reasoned that Ruo Manni was a highly independent person. As long as the B City base people didn’t pose a threat to her, there was no need for him to interfere. Besides, with Hebrew Adam by her side, he was confident she wouldn’t get into trouble.

Since the apocalypse, nightfall had come much earlier. When Ruo Manni’s group returned to the base, it had already been dark for some time. Between parking and setting up the RV, another half hour passed, yet it was only about 7 PM.

The RV was parked just ten meters behind the Lin family villa. However, the downpour was relentless, and by the time Ruo Manni and Hebrew Adam walked to the villa, their clothes and hats were soaked.

Seeing her daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law dripping wet, Lin mother immediately wanted them to change into dry clothes. But before she could act, the two pressed a button on their belts, and their clothes dried instantly.

“Little sister, is this another one of those high-tech items? Do you have any extras?” Lin Ruihai asked, unsurprised but clearly envious.

Ruo Manni did have three extra sets, but they were all women’s sizes. If Lin Ruihai didn’t mind looking a bit feminine, he could wear one.

“I have some,” Hebrew Adam said unexpectedly.

Then, out of nowhere, a pile of clothes appeared in the living room. Ruo Manni glanced at the stack and estimated there were at least a hundred outfits, including a dozen or so women’s sizes.

She couldn’t help but feel a bit awkward. ‘Was His Highness the Prince running a wholesale operation? Why was he carrying so many protective suits? Could it be that he had appropriated the Seventh Army’s supplies?’

These protective suits are no ordinary items—they are exclusive to the military or certified mercenary groups, and they come with a hefty price tag.

Ruo Manni was unaware that the Crown Prince had anticipated their needs. Since their mission was announced at the last minute for confidentiality, Ruo Manni and her companions hadn’t had time to prepare sufficient supplies. However, the Crown Prince had prepared a wide range of resources and entrusted them all to Hebrew Adam, who carried them in his storage ring.

Ruo Manni was surprised. While Hebrew Adam didn’t seem particularly warm or familial toward her unexpected relatives, he was surprisingly generous when it came to providing resources.

“Thank you,” Ruo Manni couldn’t help but express her gratitude.

Hebrew Adam glanced at her, his expression slightly displeased. Ruo Manni immediately understood—His Highness found her overly formal.

She quickly flashed him a charming smile, and only then did Hebrew Adam, in his usual proud manner, look away.

Lin Kexin, meanwhile, was oblivious to their subtle exchange of affection. The sight of the protective suits thrilled her, and she rushed over to inspect them.

“Brother, these are advanced protective suits! They’re not just waterproof and fireproof; they’re also highly resistant to damage. Handguns can’t penetrate them, and even Tier 5 mutated beasts might not be able to tear through. More importantly, they’re heat- and cold-resistant. Mom, Dad, take these and wear them later. These suits automatically adjust to temperature changes and even clean themselves. You’ll never feel too hot or too cold.”

Lin Ruihai hadn’t expected his future brother-in-law to be so generous. Hearing his younger sister list the suits’ benefits, he wasted no time in accepting them. With these suits, guards and patrol officers wouldn’t have to worry about the cold in the harsh winter. They wouldn’t need to bundle up like balls, and their reaction times would improve in emergencies.

Before the trip to Pingyang City, Hebrew Adam had also provided Lin Ruihai with three standard lightbrains after Ruo Manni mentioned the difficulty of staying in touch. Lin Ruihai, Song Changlong, and Lin Kexin had already linked their devices to Ruo Manni’s group and could contact them anytime.

Knowing Ruo Manni’s travel plans, Lin Ruihai had informed their mother in advance that Ruo Manni would return that day.

Lin mother prepared a table full of dishes, inviting her daughter and future son-in-law to sit down. However, she was worried about the latter’s distinguished background—being a foreign prince—and unsure if he could eat Earth’s food. But not inviting him was out of the question.

Thanks to Wang Miaomiao’s earlier cooking, Hebrew Adam had grown accustomed to Earth cuisine.

“Hebrew, if you’re not used to the food or want something else, just tell me,” Lin mother said, carefully addressing her future son-in-law.

She felt fortunate that he had learned Chinese. Though his pronunciation was a bit off, at least they could communicate. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have known how to talk to him. Knowing he was a prince from another planet, Lin mother worried that their simple family meals might not suit his tastes.

As for her daughter, no matter whose body she was in, Lin mother didn’t believe Ruo Manni would dare criticize her cooking.

“This is delicious. Mom’s cooking is excellent,” Hebrew Adam replied earnestly.

The Lin family, eating politely at the table, froze mid-action. Ruo Manni, in particular, stared at Hebrew Adam in surprise. Where had he learned to call her mom “Mom”?

Noticing her reaction, Hebrew Adam hesitated, looking puzzled. “Isn’t it customary for a son-in-law to call his mother-in-law ‘Mom’?”

The Lin family exchanged confused looks. Who on Earth had taught this alien prince to say such a thing—and even refer to himself as a ‘live-in son-in-law’?

Ruo Manni, however, couldn’t help but laugh. It was her first time seeing the prince act so adorably clueless.

After a satisfying meal, the rain outside continued to pour heavily. The temperature had dropped from the mid-teens during the day to seven or eight degrees, and the chill in the air was palpable.

“Luckily, sis, you found that apocalypse survival guide. Over the past couple of days, I organized a team to dig drainage ditches from the mountains on both sides of the base. It should prevent flash floods,” Lin Ruihai said, listening to the rain with both relief and concern.

This kind of weather was prone to causing emergencies. Feeling restless, Lin Ruihai and Song Changlong suited up in the protective gear Hebrew Adam had given them and prepared to patrol the base.

Father and Mother Lin, though worried, didn’t stop Lin Ruihai and Song Changlong. It was their duty, and even knowing the risks, they had to go.

Hebrew Adam noticed that Lin Kexin seemed to have something to discuss with Ruo Manni, so he returned to the RV to continue his cultivation.

“After you left that day, I went to the Fierce Tiger Mercenary Group and directly asked to see their leader’s wife,” Lin Kexin began. “I told them I was the base commander’s sister. Plus, they thought I was just a harmless girl, so they generously allowed me to meet Dai Yanping.”

“That was a good move. We don’t have the time for a slow investigation,” Ruo Manni replied.

“Surprisingly, that Dai Yanping is a natural psychic,” Lin Kexin continued. “However, it seems like she doesn’t understand her abilities and hasn’t cultivated any techniques. That’s probably why she’s only managed to reach the first level as a psychic.”
