Chapter 19 - Guilt and Self-Loathing
Park Jin-ha.
She was an incredibly promising talent from the Hunter Association.
One could only say she was overflowing with talent and sense. She had debuted as a hunter at a young age and had been active in numerous gates.
And in just a few years, she had easily surpassed the achievements of veteran hunters who had been in the industry for years.
That’s why her nickname was ‘Next-Generation S-class Prospect’.
There was even talk that if the current 9 S-class hunters in Korea were to expand to 10, she would undoubtedly be the first choice.
As these rumors continued, the Hunter Association naturally issued her a mission to Busan to test her.
A gate that would be incredibly difficult to clear alone—if she could conquer it solo, they would recognize her as S-class.
Hearing the Hunter Association’s words, Park Jin-ha headed to Busan with a joyful heart. Becoming an S-class hunter was something everyone desired.
And she had one more reason for wanting to become S-class: for her brother, Park Jin-soo.
She wanted to become S-class to live more happily with Park Jin-soo, who had taken care of her since losing her parents at a young age.
After Park Jin-ha went to Busan with this resolution, she immediately took the test.
The gate looked overwhelmingly difficult, as if this was the S-class test. But no matter how difficult it was, she overcame it.
She thoroughly proved why she was called the ‘Next-Generation S-class Prospect’.
After fighting in the gate for an entire week, she finally cleared it, and the Hunter Association recognized her as Korea’s 10th S-class hunter.
When the S-class hunter’s certification fell into Park Jin-ha’s hands, she was ecstatic.
Because in Korean society, hunters were nobility, and a hunter’s rank was absolute.
Becoming an S-class hunter meant many restrictions would disappear, she could earn a lot of money, and be praised by others.
Most importantly, she could now operate a guild with her brother.
Therefore, Park Jin-ha believed her remaining life would only unfold in rosy hues.
But after becoming S-class, she couldn’t help but slightly complain that she shouldn’t have become S-class.
Because as her value increased, the eyes and hands targeting her had become too numerous.
The value of an S-class in Korea was truly high. Large guilds all wanted her, and it was natural that they would use any means to obtain her.
The Order, Sword Saint Society, Witch’s Temptation—all guilds were trying to recruit her by offering hundreds of billions of won.
Park Jin-ha naturally rejected all of these. Because her purpose was not particularly to join a large guild.
She wanted to succeed, but she had no interest in large guilds, because she was satisfied being in a guild with her brother, Park Jin-soo.
So she rejected all proposals from large guilds, and that’s where the problem began.
The moment she refused to join a large guild, events began to burst around Park Jin-ha as if they had been waiting.
With Yoo Eun-ha’s guild having collapsed, large guilds were competing fiercely, and Park Jin-ha’s influence could not be ignored. With the mindset of ‘We must absolutely have you, by any means necessary,’ large guilds were hovering around Park Jin-ha.
At first, Park Jin-ha didn’t think much of it. Because she had the strength to protect herself, and the large guilds couldn’t really threaten her.
But that wasn’t the case.
Park Jin-ha could protect herself, but she couldn’t protect her brother, Park Jin-soo.
While in Busan, shortly after finishing her S-class celebration event, she heard that Park Jin-soo had nearly suffered a mishap in a gate.
She couldn’t help but shiver like a cold sweat had fallen over her.
Fortunately, due to a benefactor’s existence, nothing happened to Park Jin-soo, but he could have been in serious trouble if things had gone slightly wrong.
So she was too anxious to stay in Busan.
Although the event had much time left, she canceled everything and rushed straight to Seoul.
If anything happened to her brother, becoming S-class would mean nothing.
When Park Jin-ha arrived in Seoul and returned to her brother’s company after a long time, she encountered some ruffians.
These people, who looked obviously shady, were undoubtedly hired by large guilds.
Park Jin-ha couldn’t help but be furious at the thought that these people were trying to kidnap Park Jin-soo.
So she dealt with them all right then and there.
She was in a very sensitive state now.
She didn’t want to leave even a spark.
The situation was so anxious and irritating for her that she wanted to resolve it quickly, even if it meant being somewhat violent.
But…
But, this shouldn’t have happened.
No matter how irritating and anxious, this should not have occurred.
“Jin-ha… Who did this? Don’t you know?”
Hospital.
Park Jin-soo, who had moved Lee Si-woo to the hospital, sighed.
And continued his previous conversation.
Park Jin-soo looked at Park Jin-ha and began to ask about the truth of the incident.
“That… brother… that… I… I… I…”
Park Jin-ha couldn’t help but hesitate about how to answer Park Jin-soo’s question.
In fact, there was only one thing she should say.
‘She misunderstood and stabbed Lee Si-woo in the abdomen.’
It wasn’t a difficult thing to think about what to say.
But the words wouldn’t come out of Park Jin-ha’s mouth.
She tried to gather courage, but the words just kept circling.
Park Jin-ha knew that Lee Si-woo had saved Park Jin-soo’s life.
She had decided that if she ever met Lee Si-woo, she would definitely repay him.
But to stab such a person with a knife—this was unacceptable.
“… Is that… Jin-ha. No, wait… I’m just worrying unnecessarily, right?”
Seeing the hesitant Park Jin-ha, an uneasy thought crossed Park Jin-soo’s mind.
Could Jin-ha have done this to Si-woo?
A brief uneasy thought, but for some reason, that uneasy thought became a certainty in Park Jin-soo’s mind.
“Could it be… that you did this to hyung Si-woo? My life’s benefactor… Could it be, Jin-ha? Did you do this?”
Park Jin-soo began to ask Park Jin-ha with an anxious expression.
He continued to ask with a ‘maybe not’ heart, hoping she would say no.
Right now, Park Jin-soo wanted her to answer no when he asked.
Could Park Jin-ha really have done this to his benefactor?
If so, there would be nothing more terrible.
His benefactor being attacked by his own sister…
Such a thing should never happen.
“… I’m sorry…”
But reality was cold.
Park Jin-ha couldn’t deny it.
Which meant she affirmed it.
It was as if Park Jin-ha admitted that she was the one who did this to Lee Si-woo.
Something that should never have happened had occurred.
“Jin-ha… I want to ask you something…”
Park Jin-soo’s heart sank.
His sister stabbing the benefactor was something a person should never do.
But… Park Jin-soo thought there might be some reason.
He momentarily considered whether there might be another reason why Jin-ha did this.
With a trembling heart, Park Jin-soo began to ask Jin-ha in detail.
“Jin-ha… Did hyung Si-woo do something bad to you?”
“No…”
“Or did hyung Si-woo do something bad to someone other than you?”
“… No…”
“Then did hyung Si-woo do some other wrong that I don’t know about…?”
“…”
He asked if Si-woo might have done something strange to Jin-ha, but of course, that wasn’t the case.
Si-woo was the good person he thought he was. That’s why this situation was even more difficult for Park Jin-soo.
His sister, Park Jin-ha, had tried to kill such a good person.
Understanding everything, Park Jin-soo’s expression darkened.
“Why… why did you do this… Jin-ha… He was my life’s benefactor…”
At this moment, Park Jin-soo couldn’t even raise his head from shame.
To stab a knife into someone to whom he should be endlessly grateful…
Covering his face with both hands, he began to lament to Park Jin-ha.
“I’m… I’m sorry… I was trying to protect you…”
Park Jin-ha couldn’t raise her head in front of such a brother.
She offered a slightly apologetic explanation in a subdued manner.
“He looked too suspicious… So I was trying to kill him…”
From her perspective, Si-woo looked too suspicious, so she felt she had no choice.
“If he seemed suspicious, why didn’t you call me first? Haa… Jin-ha… You should have just confirmed a bit…”
But this was absolutely not a valid excuse.
Park Jin-soo didn’t seem to think this was a reasonable explanation at all.
“… I’m sorry.”
Park Jin-ha couldn’t argue with Park Jin-soo.
Because Park Jin-soo was 100% right.
If he seemed suspicious, she should have made a phone call.
Everything could have been resolved with just a brief call.
If she had been able to make such a judgment, this wouldn’t have happened.
This was purely caused by her foolish unilateral decision.
“I’m truly sorry…”
Park Jin-ha continued to apologize with her head bowed.
“Haa…”
Park Jin-soo continued to sigh.
In such a gloomy atmosphere.
Suddenly!
The hospital room door opened.
“Oppa…!!!”
A girl with short black hair ran to Lee Si-woo.
It was Lee Si-woo’s sister, Lee Si-eun.
“Huuuuu… Oppa… Oppa… What happened to you.”
Si-eun immediately ran and hugged Si-woo, beginning to cry.
Looking at Si-woo in a patient’s gown with an IV, tears fell like pearls from her cute face.
“Oppa… Don’t die… Oppa. What will I do without you… Huuuuu…”
Si-eun cried more sorrowfully than anyone in the world.
As if she couldn’t believe what happened to her brother.
“… Ms. Lee Si-eun… I’m sorry.”
After crying for several minutes, Park Jin-soo apologized to her.
He had no choice but to apologize.
“Wh-what exactly happened to my brother? Who on earth did this to our brother?”
Looking at Park Jin-soo, Si-eun began to question him.
Si-eun could only cry and angrily question why this happened.
“Ms. Lee Si-eun… I’m sorry. My sister… due to a misunderstanding…”
“I’m… I’m sorry… I did this…”
Facing the questioning Si-eun, Park Jin-soo bowed his head.
Park Jin-ha also confessed her mistake and bowed to Si-eun.
Hoping to be forgiven…
“Y-you? You did this?”
Si-eun looked at Park Jin-ha with tears still flowing.
“Why did you do this to my brother? Why exactly…! Did my brother do something wrong? Was this situation absolutely necessary? Could you not have handled this differently?”
She began to question and rage while crying.
With her brother’s terrible condition right next to her, Si-eun could not accept this situation.
Why exactly did her brother have to suffer like this?
Si-eun was overwhelmed with grief.
“I can’t live without my brother.”
Si-eun considered Si-woo incredibly precious.
For siblings who had only each other as family, they were irreplaceable to each other.
“Why exactly did you do this? Why did you do this!!!!? Huaaaaa.”
Si-eun collapsed to the ground.
And lay face down, continuing to cry.
“I… I… was wrong.”
Park Jin-ha had no choice but to apologize.
In summary, she had essentially destroyed the lives of ordinary siblings.
Moreover, the life of the benefactor who saved her precious brother and that benefactor’s sister.
Waves of self-loathing and guilt were now flooding Park Jin-ha’s emotions.
“I’m sorry… I’m the worst person in the world… I… I’m trash.”
Tears began to fall from Park Jin-ha’s eyes drop by drop.
She was so regretful of her foolish judgment.
Park Jin-ha knelt and began to beg pitifully.
What if she should just die…?
“Ugh…”
While worrying about this, she noticed Lee Si-woo regaining consciousness.
