Blessed to be the Villain

Chapter 20: Common trop

Ethan could tell how serious the situation was just by looking at Ralf, who was gazing at him sharply, his piercing eyes filled with scrutiny. The knight's stern demeanor made Ethan's skin prickle.

"Crap… what kind of accusation is this?"

Was he not supposed to know about it? If he lied, would Ralf see through him?

The weight of the situation pressed against Ethan's mind. He could feel it—this was tricky. He needed to be smart. As someone who had read countless novels, he knew that moments like these were dangerous. A single wrong word could lead to disaster.

He had two choices.

One—he could act as if he knew everything.

Two—he could play clueless and see where it led.

After a brief hesitation, he chose the latter.

Maintaining a confused expression, he looked up at Ralf and spoke, his voice carrying a hint of uncertainty.

"I… I read it in a book. A book I found in the library back home."

Ralf's eyes narrowed slightly, his sharp gaze never leaving Ethan's face. His expression remained unreadable, but the way he held himself—rigid, poised—suggested he was analyzing every word, every flicker of emotion.

"How did the book look?" Ralf asked, his voice firm. "And what exactly did you read from it?"

Ethan's fingers curled slightly against his lap. This was something he could answer. After all, he had read so many novels where a mysterious ancient book played a role in uncovering secrets. It was a common trope.

He furrowed his brows, as if sifting through memories, then spoke in a contemplative tone.

"Well… it looked very old. That's actually why I picked it up in the first place—I thought it might be an interesting find. But I quickly lost interest in it. It wasn't very engaging… something about wars or something," he said, his tone deliberately casual. Then, tilting his head, he asked, "Why is that important?"

For a moment, Ralf didn't respond. His strange expression slowly eased, his rigid shoulders relaxing slightly. Then, after a small sigh, he said,

"It is important… but not too much."

There was something in the way he spoke that made Ethan feel as if Ralf wasn't telling him everything.

Ralf then continued, "As for your question, I don't know much about that subject. But I can tell you that, yes, bloodline awakening is a real thing. However, I don't know much about it."

He turned on his heel, walking towards the door. With a firm yet respectful tone, he added,

"Enjoy your meal, Young Master."

Ethan watched him closely, his crimson eyes studying the knight's retreating figure. Something about this whole exchange felt… off. Ralf knew more than he was letting on. But why wasn't he speaking?

The thought lingered in Ethan's mind as he quickly spoke up, just as Ralf was about to leave.

"Sir Ralf, I'd like to go outside and tour the town."

Ralf paused mid-step. He turned slightly, his lips pressing into a thin line as he seemed to consider the request. A slow breath left his nose before he gave a short nod.

"That's fine. You may go at noon. The knights will be ready to escort and guard you."

With that, he exited the room, the door clicking shut behind him.

Ethan exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. His fingers lightly drummed against the table.

"He knows something… I'm sure of it."

But as the scent of freshly prepared food wafted up to his nose, his thoughts momentarily shifted. His stomach let out a low growl, reminding him that whatever suspicions he had could wait—right now, he needed to eat.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, savoring the last bite of his meal. The warm spices lingered on his tongue, and the rich flavors left him satisfied. The servants, moving efficiently, cleared away the dishes without a word.

He watched them quietly, his thoughts slowly shifting to the upcoming outing.

He was finally getting a chance to explore the town.

Excitement began to bubble within him. His crimson eyes gleamed with anticipation. He had spent so much time trapped within these walls—now, he could see the world outside.

The thought alone made his heartbeat quicken.

When the servants finished, he stood up and stretched, rolling his shoulders. He would need to get dressed appropriately. Something stylish, but practical.

As he made his way toward the wardrobe, a small smirk played on his lips.

"Let's see what this town has to offer."
