Chapter 17: 3rd rate Villain
As Ethan closed the door in his mind, the system's voice suddenly echoed, its tone laced with mild irritation.
"I don't like that guy."
Ethan let out a quiet exhale, walking toward the bed with slow, deliberate steps. "That makes two of us," he muttered, his expression unreadable.
"Doesn't he look just like a third-rate villain from a novel?"
Ethan sat down on the edge of the bed, fingers instinctively tracing the rough fabric of the blanket beneath him. "Maybe," he said, though his voice lacked real interest.
"You know, the kind that appears at the start of a story—seems like a big deal at first, only to get effortlessly crushed by the protagonist, who then looks all cool and awesome?" The system's voice carried an almost playful enthusiasm, as if amused by its own analogy.
Hearing that, a flicker of amusement crossed Ethan's face. The corners of his lips twitched slightly, lifting the weight of his earlier gloom, even if just a little. This thing really talks too much… he thought, but he couldn't deny that its presence made the silence less suffocating.
He leaned back, resting against the wall, and asked, "Where do you even get all this knowledge from?"
"From you, obviously," the system replied matter-of-factly.
Ethan's brows knitted together. "From me?" he repeated, his fingers pausing their idle movements. "Did you read my memories or something?"
"Well, kind of," the system admitted. "I don't have to 'read' them exactly—since I exist in your soul realm, I already know everything about you."
Ethan blinked, his expression hardening. A strange discomfort settled in his chest. Everything?
That meant… every moment, every thought, every secret—no matter how insignificant or humiliating—was laid bare before the system. It was a deeply unsettling realization, one that made his skin prickle.
And the fact that she was inside his head only made it worse.
His crimson eyes darkened slightly as he exhaled through his nose, trying to push away the creeping unease. But… at least she's just an AI. It's not like she's a real person. He clenched his jaw. It doesn't really matter… right?
Even as he tried to convince himself, the thought lingered.
Shaking his head, Ethan sat up straight and raked a hand through his hair. His mind drifted, searching for a distraction—something to focus on. But then, something felt… off.
A strange emptiness. A void where something should have been.
He frowned. What is it?
And then, it hit him.
Oh, right.
If he were back home, he'd probably be on his phone right now—scrolling through social media, checking messages, watching videos. That small, mindless routine had always been there, filling up quiet moments like this. But now…
His fingers curled slightly, an unfamiliar sense of loss settling in.
There was so much to do back home… so many people to meet. So many dreams.
He had always wanted to travel—see the world, experience different cultures, taste exotic food, stand before ancient wonders.
But now…?
A quiet sigh left his lips. That life is gone.
As if sensing his thoughts, the system spoke up, its voice uncharacteristically gentle.
"Don't worry, Host! You can still fulfill your dream here by traveling across this fantasy world. And this place has so many different creatures—way more interesting than Earth!"
Ethan exhaled, his shoulders relaxing slightly. A small smirk played at his lips.
"That's true," he thought.
This world was undeniably more fascinating than Earth. But it was also much more dangerous. Without advanced technology, people relied on swords and magic. Instead of wild animals, this world had dragons, phoenixes, and creatures that lurked in the shadows, waiting for a moment of weakness.
Speaking of which…
His eyes flickered with thought as he recalled one of the abilities he had received as a reward—Phoenix's Embrace. He was fairly certain it had come from Lara.
"That's right," the system confirmed.
A curious glint appeared in Ethan's gaze. He leaned forward, resting an elbow on his knee. "How is that possible? Is she half-phoenix or something?"
"No, Host," the system replied. "But she's probably a quarter phoenix. I can't determine the exact amount."
"A quarter, huh?" Ethan's fingers tapped against his knee as he considered the implications. That explains the golden eyes…
Then, a thought struck him. His gaze sharpened slightly. "Hey, I have a mythical creature's bloodline too, don't I?"
"Yes, you do," the system confirmed.
His crimson eyes narrowed with interest. "So shouldn't I have a special skill because of it?"
"You will," the system assured him. "Not just one—maybe even two. But before that, you need to awaken your bloodline."
Ethan's lips parted slightly as something else came to mind.
"Awaken…?"
His mind flashed back to a small but crucial detail. His status had shown that his succubus-incubus hybrid bloodline was only half-awakened.
His pulse quickened slightly. What exactly does that mean?
He closed his eyes, searching through the fragmented memories of the previous Ethan, hoping to find some clue.
{Author here : anyone have any ideas about blood line awaking some advantages some disadvantage, if you could give me any ideas it would really be helpful, Thank you}
