Beneath His Shadows

Chapter 12: Beneath The surface

The morning after their confrontation, Elena couldn't shake the feeling that things had changed—a subtle shift in the air, a crack in the foundation of her resolve. She had never intended to feel anything for Xavier, but now, each time their eyes met, it was like a fire was ignited, one she couldn't put out.

She tried to push it away, to ignore the way her heart raced when he was near. But the more she tried, the harder it became to deny.

The Training Room

Elena was walking down one of the long hallways when she found herself at a closed door. The sounds of punching bags being hit and the sharp crack of fists against leather filtered through. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she opened the door slightly, just enough to peek inside.

She froze.

Xavier was inside, his shirtless body covered in sweat, his muscles rippling as he threw punch after punch. His abs were defined, his chest broad, his movements sharp and controlled. His eyes were intense, focused solely on the target in front of him, as though the world outside didn't exist.

Elena couldn't tear her eyes away.

There was something raw, something dangerous about him, and it made her heart beat faster. He was a man who took control—who ruled every room he entered.

For a brief moment, she wondered what it would be like to be in his world completely. To lose herself in his power, in the chaos he thrived on.

A Surprise Encounter

"Do you want to watch me train all day, or do you have something better to do?"

Elena snapped out of her daze, turning quickly to see Xavier standing in the doorway. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes were piercing.

"I—I didn't mean to interrupt," Elena stammered, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks.

He smirked slightly. "It's fine. But if you're looking for something to do, I've got plenty of work that needs to be done."

"Work?" she repeated, confused.

Xavier took a step closer. "You don't expect me to just shelter you here without contributing, do you?"

Elena's eyes narrowed. "I'm not some charity case."

Xavier's smirk deepened. "Then prove it."

The Task

Later that afternoon, Elena found herself sitting at a large desk in one of the mansion's many rooms. Xavier had given her a stack of papers—documents, contracts, and a few files.

"Go through these," he ordered. "I need to know your skills."

Elena was annoyed. "I'm an office worker, not a secretary."

Xavier glanced over at her, his face hard. "And I'm the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar company with a criminal empire on the side. You're lucky I'm giving you anything to do. You're not in a position to argue."

She bit her lip, but instead of pushing back, she got to work. It was mindless, tedious, and more than a little demeaning. But as she read through the contracts, she couldn't help but notice the level of danger that lingered in every word, every clause.

It was a world she hadn't known existed, yet she was now deeply entrenched in it.

The Unseen Power

Hours later, when she had finished the stack, Elena rubbed her tired eyes and pushed the papers aside. She hadn't expected to be drawn in so deeply, but it was hard not to when everything about Xavier's life was this intense, this consuming.

She wasn't sure what to make of it, or of him.

Xavier's shadow fell across the desk, and she looked up to find him standing there, watching her with an unreadable expression.

"Done?" he asked, his voice quieter than usual.

Elena nodded, not sure what to say.

Xavier picked up one of the papers and scanned it briefly, his eyes narrowing. "Not bad," he muttered.

She couldn't help herself. "Why are you so cold? All the time."

For a moment, Xavier didn't respond. He simply studied her, as though trying to gauge her reaction. Then, with a sigh, he stepped back.

"It's easier to be cold than to let anyone close." His voice was low, almost reflective.

Elena's heart skipped a beat. She wanted to ask more, to demand answers to the countless questions swirling in her mind, but something held her back.

"I don't want to be like them," Xavier added softly, his eyes locking with hers.

"Like who?" Elena asked.

"Like my family," he answered, his voice hardening again. "They're all about the money. The power. They don't care about anything else."

There was bitterness in his tone. Something raw and unspoken.

The Growing Connection

Later that night, Elena couldn't sleep. Thoughts of Xavier's words swirled in her mind, making it hard to settle down. The tension between them was thickening, but it wasn't just physical. There was something deeper—something he wasn't saying.

She tossed and turned, finally getting out of bed to pace around the room.

The mansion was eerily quiet, and she found herself standing by the window, staring out at the city below.

It was then that she heard a faint sound behind her.

"Can't sleep?" Xavier's voice came from the doorway, low and almost soothing.

Elena turned, her heart skipping. "What are you doing here?"

He didn't answer, his eyes watching her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.

"Neither can I," he said finally. "But we'll survive."

He stepped closer, the space between them shrinking. Elena's breath caught, and she instinctively took a step back, but her feet were rooted to the ground. She couldn't move.

Xavier was too close now, his presence overwhelming, and for a moment, Elena wondered if he could hear the rapid beating of her heart.

For a heartbeat, everything felt suspended.

And then, as if breaking some unseen barrier, Xavier leaned down, his lips brushing her ear. "You're mine now, Elena."
