Chapter 90: Pride

'I have committed so many crimes, to the point that I don't even know how many and my body... I wanted to die but I at least wanted to apologize to him first. I have met many men in my life and they all wanted one thing from me...sex, it got to the point where I was hated by other girls. My only friends ended up being killed and then I was left completely alone. I am not going to play victim, what happened happened, I will do my best to meet his expectations, the only man who has not looked at me with lust in his eyes.' Her thoughts stopped, her grip tightening around the weapon in her hands.

She looked over the battlefield from a safe distance, just waiting for orders while also nerves that she would mess it up. 'calm down, you can do this, its nothing hard... dammit, my nerves are getting the better of me.' She closed her eyes and slowed her breathing, when her eyes opened again, the look in her eyes changed, 'enough, I can not fail him, no matter what.'

The order finally came, "do it, aim for the queen." She heard his voice in his head and didn't waste time.

"yes sir."

She locked onto the queen, not hesitating for a second.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Mana bullets sliced through the air, making their way towards the queen. 'That should be a direct hit.' She thought, ready to fire more if those miss. The queen sensed the mana approaching at high speed.

'hmph, such tricks won't work on me.' She put up a barrier, thinking it would deflect the bullets but they went right through almost piercing her head if it wasn't for her reaction in the very last second. The bullets still grazed her head, drawing blood.

It was a minor wound, but the shock of being hit at all was profound. Her eyes narrowed, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing her face before she masked it with a cold fury.

"Insolence!" she roared, her voice echoing across the battlefield. Her gaze snapped towards the source of the attack, locking onto Jolly's hidden position. "You dare...?" She raised her arm, a spear made of wood forming in her hand with mana condensing around it.

Jolly fired more bullets, panicking as her location was exposed but now the queen was aware of how dangerous they were so she dodged them all with ease until Jolly's gun was out of mana. 'crap, come on come on come on!' She tried to pour mana into the gun but she forgot that she cannot control mana. She looked at the queen and the right in from her, just mere inches from her face was the spear.

'N-No...' A hand appeared , grabbing the spear, saving her life. She looked at the spear in his hand, her heart beating fast, trying to get enough air. He broke the spear and looked at her for a few seconds before taking the gun.

"Not bad." The gun turned into mana and went back into his body. "Its show time."

'Good, let's begin.' He crouched with a villainous smirk and then leaped, appearing right in front of the queen mid air. "Hi there your highness."

"What-" He punched her away before she could react, the blow echoing like a sonic boom on the battlefield. All the monsters saw was their queen crashing into a tree and letting out a loud gasp.

'I-Impossible, i could not react to his attack?' She floated up, wiping the blood coming from her mouth. Vell stood where she floated, his confidence overflowing.

She steadied herself mid-air, her emerald-green eyes blazing with anger. Her voice was steady but venomous. "You dare strike me, you insolent wretch? Do you even know what kind of power you're trifling with?"

He shrugged, a casual smirk playing on his lips. "Not really. But I don't need to know." His stance shifted subtly, his feet grounding firmly into the soil. "All I need to do is win."

She raised a hand, the air around her beginning to swirl. The soft whisper of wind quickly grew into a deafening roar as a vortex formed, tearing leaves and debris from the surrounding forest. "You will regret this arrogance," she snarled. With a flick of her wrist, the wind coalesced into razor-sharp blades, each one aimed directly at him.

He didn't flinch. Instead, he raised his arm, and a faint aura of mana coated his skin like a protective layer. As the wind blades closed in, he twisted his body, dodging some and deflecting others with precise movements. Each deflection sent a ripple of energy echoing through the air, showcasing his unnaturally heightened reflexes.

"Hmph," she scoffed. "Impressive... for a brute."

"Thanks," he replied, his voice laced with sarcasm. "You're not bad yourself, for a nature lady with a temper." He looked at the attack closely, 'so this is magic?'

[Indeed, magic is essentially using mana to create or manipulate elements, in this case, wind.]

'Hmm, seems I have a long way to go.' He tried to close the gap but noticed something that surprised him. She stretched out both hands, her mana surging in a vivid green glow. The ground beneath them trembled, and massive roots erupted from the earth, coiling toward him like serpents.

He leaped back, narrowly avoiding the grasping roots. They chased him relentlessly, tearing apart anything in their path. With each step, he moved with uncanny agility, flipping over, sliding under, and even stepping on the roots to gain higher ground. "Persistent, aren't you?" he quipped.

Her lips curled into a cruel smile. "Let's see how long you can keep dancing."

She clasped her hands together, and the roots suddenly converged, forming a dense cage around him. The air inside grew suffocating as the walls closed in.

For a moment, there was silence. Then, a low chuckle echoed from within the cage. "Not bad. But not good enough."

BOOM!

A surge of mana exploded from inside, shattering the root cage into splinters. He emerged from the debris, his smirk wider, his crimson eyes glowing faintly. "You'll have to try harder than that."

The queen's expression faltered. "What... are you?" she muttered under her breath.

He tilted his head, his tone playful yet unnervingly confident. "Just a guy with a grudge and some tricks. Speaking of tricks—"

In a blur, he vanished from her sight, reappearing right behind her. His voice was a whisper in her ear. "Let me show you one."

He slammed his palm into her back, releasing a pulse of mana that sent her spiraling through the air. She caught herself mid-flight, coughing as pain radiated through her body. Her regal composure was cracking, replaced by genuine frustration and a hint of fear.

"I underestimated you," she admitted, her tone begrudging. "But this fight is far from over."

He crouched, his smirk unwavering. "Good. I was worried it'd get boring."

Her frustration boiled over as she steadied herself in the air, the mana around her arms getting more condensed. The battlefield seemed to pause, the intensity of her power commanding attention. Vell simply stood, his expression almost mocking, daring her to make the next move.

"You'll regret underestimating me," she hissed, her voice filled with venom. Find more chapters on My Virtual Library Empire

"I doubt it," he said casually, his voice carrying a dangerous undertone. He shifted his stance, his aura flaring as crimson and black mana began to spiral around him. "But let's find out."

Wind formed around her, covering her in a large circle while she prepared her attack. She pulled it leaves, stones, sticks and whatever was around. She then covered them with mana, layering them with condensed air and aiming them at Vell.

"Let's see you deflect this, insolent human!"

The attack surged forward, a destructive tide that tore through the forest, uprooting trees and killing monsters in it path.

[Warning: The density of mana in her attack is significant. Direct impact will cause major damage.]

His eyes narrowed as he analyzed the incoming storm of debris and mana. Instead of dodging, he planted his feet firmly on the ground, extending his hand. A faint blue glow emanated from his chest as the Codex stirred within him, responding to his command.

"Time for something new," he muttered, his voice calm yet firm. "Construct mode."

[Construct mode activated. Specify parameters.]

"Weapon. Long-range. High impact, precise targeting." His words were measured as he visualized the design. He poured mana from the new core into the Codex, shaping his creation.

[Parameters accepted. Constructing...]

The energy from his core flowed into his hand, solidifying into the shape of a rifle. The weapon was straightforward but deadly, built for precision and strength. Its barrel extended with glowing lines of energy, and it felt like an extension of his arm.

Jolly, watching from her hiding spot, felt her breath catch. Her heart pounded as she watched him hold his ground. "He's not even flinching," she whispered to herself, clutching her hands. "How… how is he so calm?"

The Queen's attack was just seconds away from striking but he wasn't scared and pulled the trigger.

The blast erupted with a deafening roar, a column of blue energy surging out of the rifle. The ground beneath him cracked and gave way, forming a crater from the force of the shot. The air rippled as the beam tore through the Queen's attack, obliterating it in an instant. Leaves and debris disintegrated in the wave of energy, leaving nothing in its path.

Those on the battlefield felt the surge of mana from his attack passing through them. Kana specifically was shocked at what she was seeing, 'Is that really Vell? Just what happened to him in the last 2 weeks?'

When the smoke cleared, Vell stood at the center of the crater, the rifle still in his hand. The Queen was on the far side of the battlefield, barely holding herself upright. Her barrier and attack were gone, and her body shook with effort.

"That… that shouldn't be possible," she said, her voice breaking. "No human should have that kind of power."

Jia stared from a distance, her opponent defeated, "My queen..." She clenched her fists, the scene before her eyes hard to watch.

'dammit, if only my power wasn't diminished, i would rip him apart with ease.' She thought, slowly steadying her breath.

Vell lowered the rifle, letting it dissolve back into mana that returned to his core. He flexed his fingers, testing the limits of his new power. The rush of strength coursing through him was intoxicating, but he kept his focus. He stepped forward, each movement deliberate, the ground cracking under his feet.

Jia wanted to rush in and stop him from hurting her queen but she also didn't want to get killed in the process. All she could do was just bit her lip and watch as her queen was slowly killed. As he approached, he could see Jia was torn up about this but to him, advancing forward was more important.

The queen straightened, a pained but defiant smile gracing her lips. "Impressive," she said, her voice laced with both admiration and venom. "But raw power alone won't defeat me."

"I am sorry but I am tired of this now, not to mention I am hungry as hell." He formed a mana ball in his hand, it was swirling inward like a vortex. He wasted no time, using shadow flicker, appearing right behind her and slamming the ball into her back. The mana surged into her body, detonating and destroying her insides.

Jia cried out, unable to contain her despair. "No! My queen!"

Vell looked at her one more time and sighed. The Queen collapsed to her knees, her aura diminished. The glow in her emerald eyes flickered as if the very essence of her strength was being drained. She turned her head weakly, gazing at him with a mixture of anger and resignation.

"You think... you've won?" she muttered, her voice barely audible but tinged with defiance. "You may defeat me, human, but the forest will remember. My people... will remember."

He crouched down to her level, his expression softer now, though his crimson eyes retained their cold intensity. "Maybe," he said, his tone measured. "But you started this remember? See it through to the like a true ruler."

He raised his hand, prepared to finish it, when he noticed Jia charging toward him, her face twisted with desperation. Her weapon trembled in her grip, but she didn't falter.

"Stop!" she screamed, tears streaming down her face. "Please, don't kill her!"

He glanced at Jia, his expression unreadable. He lowered his hand, pausing. "Why?"

She fell to her knees between him and the Queen, spreading her arms protectively. "Because she's my queen! She saved me when no one else would. I know what she's done is wrong, but... she's all I have left!"

The battlefield fell silent, the tension palpable. He studied her for a long moment before sighing deeply. He stood up straight, stepping back. "I'm not heartless," he said, his voice calm. "But understand this: mercy isn't weakness. If she comes after me or anyone else again, I won't hesitate."

He turned his back to them, walking away as his body relaxed, the glow of his mana dimming. The monsters that had been watching in stunned silence scattered, their morale shattered without their queen's strength to lead them.

The Queen coughed weakly, looking at Jia with a faint smile. "You... fool," she whispered. "Why did you risk your life... for me?"

Jia sobbed, clutching her queen's hand. "Because you're my family. You gave me a purpose when I had none. Please, let's stop this war. Let's... let's just survive."

The Queen's gaze softened as she closed her eyes, her body sagging into Jia's arms. "Perhaps... it's time to rest." This should have been it, the end to this battle but something inside the queen just could not stand this humiliation. She gathered every ounce of mana she had left and charged at Vell with a furious look in her eyes.

"NO, PLEASE STOP THIS, MY QUEEN!!" Jia screamed out but the queen was not listening.

Vell didn't even turn around. He felt the surge of mana behind him, raw and desperate, a final gambit born of humiliation and rage. With a resigned sigh, he muttered, "Some people never learn."

The Queen, her body battered and broken, pushed forward with everything she had left, channeling all her remaining energy into one last attack. Her form flickered with an unstable green aura as the ground beneath her cracked and buckled under the strain.

Jia's voice echoed in the distance, her cries growing hoarse. "STOP! PLEASE!"

He finally turned, his eyes locking onto the Queen. For a brief moment, there was something in his expression—not anger, not malice, but pity. "what a shame," he said coldly.

She lunged at him, her hand glowing with an unstable mana spear, aiming for his heart. But before she could land her attack, Vell moved. It was almost too fast to see, she saw a flash of light, followed by a clean, precise arc.

The battlefield fell silent.

She froze mid-motion, her eyes wide with shock. Her weapon disintegrated as the remaining mana left her body. Slowly, her head tilted, her emerald eyes meeting Vell's one last time. "I... see," she whispered, her voice faint and trembling. "So, this is... my end."

Her body collapsed to the ground, lifeless. Her head rolled a few paces away, severed cleanly from her neck. The forest itself seemed to mourn her passing—the winds stilled, and the vibrant energy that had once surrounded her faded into a dull silence.

Jia collapsed to her knees, her hands trembling as she stared at the fallen Queen. Tears streamed down her face, and her voice broke into a choked sob. "No... no, no, no…"

Vell wiped the blood from his blade, his face stoic. "She made her choice. Sometimes, pride leads people to their downfall."

She didn't respond.

She crawled to the Queen's body, cradling her in her arms as though hoping to wake her. The monsters who had once rallied under the her banner scattered into the forest, leaderless and defeated.

Vell turned away, "You should learn from her mistakes. Don't let anger or loyalty blind you."

He began to walk away, the battlefield eerily quiet except for Jia's anguished cries. The mission was complete, and the reward notification popped up.
