Chapter 297: Feng Foxes vs. Shizi Dogs (7)
Three minutes into the game, the score was 59-50.
The Feng Foxes had a nine-point lead once again. They managed to suppress Kai after Zeren revealed his weakness.
The audience was on the edge of their seats, with some feeling ill.
Miss Cherry turned to Sir Dao when his breath got caught in the back of his throat.
"Heart attack?" she exclaimed, capturing the others' attention.
Those sitting next to them started gossiping, wondering if the old man next to them was going to drop unconscious to the ground.
Sir Dao shook his head as he drank some water. He placed his hand over his heart to calm it down.
"I'm fine," he muttered, wondering why he was so worked up in the first place.
Meanwhile, the office workers didn't expect such a great game.
"Is this what young people watch these days?"
"As expected, this is too much for my old heart."
"But I love it! I heard that the Feng Foxes had been the second-best team for the longest time. Can there be a change this year?"
The game continued, and Chunlei and Yiming continued to tag team Kai, not letting him inside the paint.
Zeren smirked.
"That's right," he whispered. "This is still something you can't beat me in."
Yuze clicked his tongue in frustration and called for a substitution.
He stood from his seat and gestured for Kai to come back to the bench.
Their supporters buzzed with worry. They were taking out Kai, the player who had been on Chunlei's level. The decision seemed baffling to the fans!
"Kai is going to make a big fuss about this," Shang said, already expecting him to complain. He knew that Kai loved playing way too much.
However, to their surprise, Kai didn't argue.
He jogged over to the bench, grabbing a towel and draping it over his head. He closed his eyes, shutting out the world. The other players exchanged puzzled looks, unsure of what to make of this. Lina watched him closely but couldn't bring herself to speak.
"Is he alright?" Andy whispered.
"I think he's upset," Jinping blatantly answered.
Lina bit her lip in worry as she glanced at Kai.
Meanwhile, the girls from Juren High also watched Kai.
"I think he's crying," one of the girls said.
"I should go down there and comfort him," the prettiest girl chimed.
The group of students sitting next to them shook their heads in amusement.
"Did they come here to watch the game or Kai Guo?"
"Definitely the latter."
The Shizi Dogs left Kai alone as he continued tuning out the world.
Two minutes passed, and the gap still hadn't closed. The score remained stuck at 59-50.
The Shizi Dogs were holding their ground, but they weren't gaining any on the Foxes.
Suddenly, the court was filled with loud shouts. Kai removed the towel from his eyes and looked up to see Yuze on the ground, clutching his ankle.
He stood from the bench along with his teammates. They frowned, concern seen on their faces.
Yiming, who was the reason behind Yuze's fall, also seemed apprehensive.
"Yuze!" Lina exclaimed from the sidelines.
Yuze bit his lip and stood from the ground. Then, his calm demeanor came back as he positioned himself at the free-throw line.
Kai sighed in relief. "He's alright," he muttered.
With that, Yuze shot for his foul, and he successfully managed to get one in.
59-51.
The other shot missed by a few margins, and it bounced off the rim.
Yiming was quick to screen the Dogs' benchwarmer out, and he quickly threw the ball to Chunlei. It was hard to control Chunlei without Kai, so he was able to shoot from the three-point line, now widening the gap to two digits once more.
62-51.
Lina sighed in frustration. Then, she glanced to her side and found that Kai was already alert.
With that, she pursed her lips and carefully patted his shoulder.
"Are you...alright?" she asked. "You don't have to feel upset about missing the three-pointers. You've only played for a few months," she continued.
"Some players play for years, but they never get to—"
Lina paused when Kai faced her, finally noting his red eyes.
She sat there for a while, just scrutinizing Kai's appearance.
Then, she tilted her head to the side, freezing when she realized something.
"Did you just... sleep?"
"Yeah," Kai answered, his voice calm. "Needed some rest. It's late. I'm used to playing in the morning."
"Running after Chunlei has gotten me tired after a long while. He's really good," he continued.
Lina couldn't say anything for a while. "You actually slept after those intense moments?" she exclaimed.
The other players shook their heads, confused and slightly amused.
"What's wrong with him?" Jinping muttered.
Andy chuckled. "I can never really predict what you're doing, Kai," he said.
Kai smiled and just shrugged off their concerns.
Then, his face turned serious once more as he glanced at the clock.
Three minutes left in the third quarter.
Then, he glanced at the score Experience tales at My Virtual Library Empire
65-53.
"Perfect," he muttered under his breath.
As he watched his teammates struggle to run after the two-digit gap, he finally turned to Lina with an excited glint in his eyes.
"Coach, Lina," he said, capturing their attention.
The two nervous individuals turned to look at Kai.
"It's time," he said before focusing his gaze on the court once more.
Lina and Coach glanced at each other, aware of Kai's request before they started the game.
"Should I call for a time-out?" Coach Muchen asked.
Kai nodded, so the coach signaled to the professional scorer's table.
The whistle blew, halting the players' movements.
Then, as they walked back to the bench, Kai couldn't help but smirk.
He glanced at the Feng Fox's bench and saw confident smiles gracing their lips.
For a second, he made eye contact with Zeren, and the latter smirked at him—as if telling Kai that their time in the league was over.
However, Kai merely smirked back, making Zeren scoff.
As his teammates gathered around him, Kai finally revealed the weapon he had been hiding all along.
"It's time," he started off.
"It's time for us to bring in the perfect line-up."
