~~~Azrael Jaesyrian, Ninth Moon, 277 AC~~~
~~~Road of the Ocean, Westerland~~~
After a day of riding, the whole convoy decided to stop for half a day, some ladies wanted to rest, and the horses and ravagers had to be fed, as I didn't want a scene of one attacking someone to eat them.
My stay in Westeros was pleasant, full of luxuries, comforts, and pleasantries that only a high status could offer. Having seen the state in which many lived in Lannisport, plus what I remembered from the series and some things from the books, it was more than clear that many people survived to make it to the next day alive.
Living conditions in Westeros were not the best, disease plagued the land, food was often scarce for the poorest while kings and lords held banquets and tournaments every week.
That made me thankful to the entity that sent me here, because had it not been for discovering that day that menu in the middle of the Lazhar dessert, I would most likely be a slave or worse, I would be dead by now.
I had come a long way, and this was the first time I took a break from everything, with the events in the Xandar formed, after the taking of the yellow cities, the Dothraki, the Nhai Jhogos, the Qarth affair, plus the massive amount of construction I would have to do once I returned, made the stay in Westeros more enjoyable, since I was not under pressure with a whole realm on my shoulders.
Had it not been for Gallio and the High Council, I would have collapsed by now, just as Maester Aemon once said; <
Thinking about that, I couldn't help but turn and see Aerys mounted on his horse, he rode near Ser Gerold Hightower, nicknamed the White Bull, plus Ser Arthur Dayne, and Ser Barristan Selmy, Aerys, while looking tired, sad, and somewhat melancholy, still conveyed the aura of a king, one who had to go through a lot, like all Targaryen kings.
Having survived a fire that wiped out almost his entire family, dispatching his parents and siblings, and then becoming king of a weak and brittle kingdom by the burning of Summerhall, must have been a lot of weight for someone so young, yet he turned out to be someone strong and decisive, ruling Westeros, and while he had now been neglecting his appearance for the last two years, that didn't mean he was a bad king, at least not at the moment.
So determined to give him a detail, to remind him of what his ancestors felt many years ago, I offered to give him a token of that power, "King Aerys, I know of your attachment to the Wyverns and Endoxes," I said, pulling my horse up to his as Onno and Essino followed close behind me.
Aerys smiled, and his dull, dull eyes came to life. No doubt, the subject of close kinship to dragons fascinated him: "Yes, they are beautiful creatures, masters of the sky and reckless of only their kind. They remind me much of my family history. Once, the Targaryen were great, but with the Dance and Summerhall, that glory is past."
"Yes, I have read the history books, Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon," I replied, that was a story to add to the many injustices and unpunished wars that had plunged Westeros into death, famine, and desolation, and those to come would not be far behind.
"Yes, Rhaenyra, Viserys I's firstborn, quite possibly would have been the first queen of Westeros, but her usurper brother took that to his grave, along with the dragons," his answer took me by surprise, in a macho, patriarchal civilization, Aerys telling me that Aegon was the culprit and not Rhaenyra was mind-boggling. "But it is mentioned that Rhaenyra gave away the dragons of her house to nameless bastards, plus she caused many injustices, the nickname Maegor with tits comes from there."
Aerys laughed, though his laugh was bitter, "Hahaha, yes, the little people have always liked to judge the dragon, not knowing they have no right to do so, not even the gods, as for Rhaenyra, her father had already named her heir, but that didn't align with the great houses, full of greed and envy, they have always wanted more than they deserve, that's why I appreciate the northerners, at least they have always turned out loyal."
I kept thinking about that last line, knowing that the North would be the first to take up arms against the crown when the rebellion began, "In Xandar it's not like that, is it? From what I have learned from Lady Janna, the loyalty and love that the Xandarian crown has on Xandar is great, that is lacking in these lords."
I thought of Xandar, and what it had built, and no doubt something like treason was out of my mind, and out of the minds of those who lived there and were joyous to call themselves Xandarians, so no, something like treason or rebellion would not be seen.
"No, I don't know what the state of loyalty is like here in Westeros, but in Xandar, Xandar enjoys a united front, we have just come out of a two-year bloody war, you still see battles on the borders, and now what the people want most is the peace and freedom they have waited so long for."
"Yes, former slaves, living that way must be horrible, with a shackle around your neck, you have done a great thing Azrael, worthy of the history books, you alone have created a great, strong, and rich kingdom, and in just two years, who knew the Dothrakis, famous for their savagery and brutality, would unite to free slaves, hahaha, the world is changing, and I fear Rhaegar is not ready for it."
"He's young, he has time to learn, and from what I see, he's been playing his chips well, considering the people of King's Landing love him," I said, a bit confused as to what Aerys saw in Rhaegar, 'that's true, he has charisma with the people, he wins people over easily, but it's his mind that worries me,' wow, who knew Aerys, the one who would once be called the mad king, would be worried about his son's mind.
"He believes a lot in fantasies and legends, he dabbles in it a lot, icemen, prophecies, I fear that will cause him to act without thought and plunge the realm into war or desolation, I saw firsthand what fantasies and prophecies can accomplish, my family perished because of it, and I don't want that for Rhaegar."
And to think that would be exactly what would happen, perhaps one of the bloodiest wars ever, all brought about by one man's clamor as he became obsessed with a prophecy. Deciding to change the subject and tell him what I had thought before, I said; "Wyverns are very aggressive, and the risk taken in taming and flying one is very high, that is why those who have one as a mount are trained for long hours a day to avoid accidents, so letting you fly on one, even in the company of its rider, is a very dangerous thing to do."
"However, Endoxes, while it surpasses the wyverns in power, is more manageable if I am around, so, Aerys, would you like to fly and soar into the skies?" I told him, that was something I had decided to do a few days ago, I would lose nothing by letting Aerys take to the skies, and no doubt Aerys would not pass up the opportunity to feel what his ancestors felt.
I could feel Aerys' excitement, almost palpable was the feeling of excitement he began give off, which made me smile, "Of course I would! How could I not accept it? It is something I dream of every night, the past greatness, the ancient power, the one that was taken from us by force."
"Okay, then let's wait, I'll call Endoxes," I explained, to which he gave me a confused look, "won't we go to him at Casterly Rock?" While dragons were considered gods, the idea of calling a dragon from such a great distance was implausible, partly because dragons no longer existed enough to catalog their behaviors with their riders.
"No, Endoxes and I have shared a connection since I became his rider. What he feels, I feel, and what he desires, I do. It's an exchange of emotions and feelings that is a bit difficult to explain, but it connects us. Your ancestors must have felt the same, no doubt." I explained, to which he only nodded, immersed in his thoughts.
'Endoxes, I need you, can you get off your scaly ass and come to me' I communicated with Endoxes through whatever it was that linked our minds, and soon, the End dragon's robust and radical presence was appearing.
'What do you want Azrael? Let me sleep, or are we going to kill someone? If so, I'll gladly come. The very cynical one thought of killing people, the burning in Yi Ti kind of stuck with him liking it. 'Just come, will you?'
After the exchange, I set out to wait for Endoxes, while Aerys looked like a little boy waiting for a gift, the love for dragons was strong in him no doubt, a feeling little shown, but one he no doubt longed for.
