Chapter 7: Chapter 7
Walking down the uneven dirt road on her way back to the village, Dongfang Xi pursed her lips as she looked up towards the sky.
It was blue as always, yet perhaps, it won't remain so for much longer.
Based on the information she just read, the apocalypse would start roughly about three months later, beggining with the sky darkening at noontime with lightning flashing nonstop, and then came the red rain.
People developed high fevers right after, with some successfully awakening supernatural abilities while others with relatively low immunity directly lost their sanity and turned into man-eating monsters that multiplied their numbers by preying on human kind.
Clearly, as opposed to some apocalyptic novels she once read where the zombie virus originated from the experiments of some shady organization, this type of apocalypse was more of a natural disaster or rather, some form of evolution.
It is no wonder why despite having known this information in advance, the military remained helpless and could only do their utmost in preparation for the oncoming disaster.
If you can't prevent it, then you can only try your best to fend for yourself.
"Well, it's not like there's much I can do about it anyway."
After all, although she had tempered herself to become very strong all these years and knew a thing or two about medicine, courtesy of her past experiences, Dongfang Xi knew very well that creating a Zombie Vaccine was way out of her league.
Rather than worrying about the inevitable, she might as well do her job properly.
Hastening her footsteps, Dongfang Xi soon arrived at the village entrance.
However, before she could go further, she was called over by a few village aunties who usually spent their time gossiping underneath the shade of the old Banyan tree.
"Hello Auntie Wu, Auntie Zhao, and Auntie Wang. Is there anything I can help you with? Did the children go to play in the mountains again? Should I go help you get them back?"
"Oh, the little brats are fine. They've been behaving quite well recently. It's about something else." Auntie Zhao chuckled.
"Right! Half an hour ago, three people riding an expensive-looking car arrived in front of your house. However, your grandparents are currently not at home so they have been waiting outside since then."
Hearing their words, Dongfang Xi raised her brows.
Visitors?
But they weren't expecting anyone recently.
Moreover, if it was someone she knew, they would have informed her first.
"Well, thank you aunties. I'd better head home now."
"Sure. Sure. Go ahead. Don't keep your guests waiting."
After bidding goodbye to the the three village aunties, Dongfang Xi ran all the way to her family's old courtyard and finally caught sight of the aforementioned car.
It was black in color overall and with one glance, she could tell that it was a specially modified car made with bulletproof materials.
A rather strange sight to see in a backwater village like theirs.
Thinking for a moment, Dongfang Xi walked over with leisurely footsteps, her face plastered with a casual smile. However, only she herself knew that she was ready to take a gun out of her space at any moment as long as she felt even a trace of ill intent from the other party.
Just when she was about to reach the car, the door of the back seat opened and out came a man with a face as cold as ice.
Dongfang Xi "..."
She knew that the military had already made arrangements for her to recognize her biological family in order to facilitate her next mission...
However, she never expected that her relatives would come to the door so soon, it really caught her off-guard.
"Uh... good day sir. I heard you were looking for our family. Is there anything I can help you with?"
Xiao Jue looked down at the girl in front of him with complicated eyes.
Truth be told, he had long been aware of the fact that the daughter he had raised for more than ten years was not his own.
However, he never dared to act rashly nor tell his family about this matter. First of all, because his wife had never been in the best of health. Secondly, he hasn't yet found the whereabouts of his real daughter.
If he acted any differently and ended up startling the snake, he might never have the chance to see his real daughter in this life once they got rid of all the trails.
As such, he could only remain patient and search for her in secret, though it bore no fruit for a long time which made him wonder if she was still alive in the first place.
It wasn't until yesterday that one of his close associates finally found clues regarding the incident that year through words of mouth from a few witnesses and old records at the police station that he finally confirmed her whereabouts.
He didn't even stop to think for a moment that it might be a trap set for him by his enemies because for all he knew, if those people had really managed catch wind of her existence, then there is a high chance of her falling into even greater danger if he hesitated for even just a moment.
However, to his utter surprise, it had been quite a smooth journey along the way and he finally got to where she was, albeit, he found it quite awkward now that he's standing right in front of her.
He can't just tell her straight out that he was her father, right?
It would be a miracle if she believed it, considering that he hadn't even conducted a paternity test with her.
Thinking so, he couldn't help but feel distressed.
Dongfang Xi observed the minute changes in his eyes and could almost instantly guess the thoughts running through his mind despite the fact that he had maintained a cold and serious expression all this while.
However, a few minutes passed by and he just stood still, refusing to say anything and just kept staring at her which made her hair stand on end.
If others not in the know saw this scene, they might think strangely of such a sight.
No. Wait. Those "others not in the know" should include her, right?
Thinking so, she couldn't help but twitch her lips and open her mouth to say a few words.
