Chapter 20: Chapter 20 – Takagi Yuriko
Suddenly, something caught Tatsuki's attention from the corner of his eye.
"Stop the car."
Shizuka Marikawa hit the brakes sharply. While Tatsuki remained steady, Exusiai could not avoid slamming into him, her halo bumping against his chin.
"What's wrong?" Shizuka turned back.
"I think I saw someone just now."
Tatsuki got out of the car, scanning the direction where he had noticed movement.
There!
A little girl with pink hair was kneeling by a corpse, a white dog by her side. The girl sobbed while several dead bodies slowly closed in on her.
Alice Maresato—Tatsuki recognized her immediately as a character from Highschool of the Death.
With a firm stomp of his foot, the ground trembled and sank. Tatsuki could manipulate energy vectors, focusing them to amplify their effect. A small application of force could generate devastating impact.
Gathering his power into a single point beneath his feet, he propelled himself forward, appearing instantly beside Alice in a flash-like teleportation.
"Woof!"
The white dog barked sharply.
"You…" Alice looked up in confusion, her tear-streaked face pale with fear.
Tatsuki raised his hand, summoning the Yin Lightning. Black lightning surged outward, enveloping the encroaching undead.
Zzzap!
The black thunder pierced through the zombies, reducing them to smoldering corpses.
Tatsuki's icy gaze shifted toward a nearby house. Through a slightly open door, a few pairs of eyes peeked out, watching.
"Hmph!" Tatsuki snorted coldly, stamping his foot once again.
The ground roiled like a tidal wave, surging toward the house.
Amid the terrified screams from inside, the building collapsed into rubble.
Alice barely had time to react before she and her dog were scooped up by Tatsuki. In an instant, he teleported back to the car, tossing them inside and shutting the door behind him.
The entire sequence unfolded seamlessly, leaving everyone in the vehicle stunned.
"What just happened?!"
Tatsuki had left for only a few seconds and returned with a little girl and her dog.
Alice looked around, her face blank with confusion.
"Uh… how did I get here?"
After a brief explanation from Alice, the group pieced together her story.
After the outbreak of the undead crisis, Alice and her father managed to escape from the chaos, but her father was murdered by a group of people who refused to help.
"What? Refusing to help is bad enough, but they killed him?!" Shizuka was in disbelief, horrified at the cruelty of human behavior.
"Where are those scumbags? I'm going to kill them!" Saya's fiery temper flared immediately.
"I'll join you!" Saeko Busujima, now emotionally steadier, added with righteous indignation.
"I agree. Scum like that deserves to be eliminated," Exusiai said with a deceptively cheerful smile that brimmed with an unmistakable killing intent.
"Don't be angry. I suspect the collapsing house just now was Tatsuki's handiwork," Saeko calmly deduced after analyzing the earlier commotion.
Tatsuki nodded, placing a large hand on Alice's head.
"Those scumbags are already buried."
"Well done."
The group unanimously approved of Tatsuki's actions.
"Thank you," Alice said, her eyes welling up with grateful tears.
Ultimately, the group decided to take Alice along with them.
The drive continued smoothly, and they soon arrived at the location Saya had indicated.
However, something seemed off.
There was no sign of a functioning settlement—just chaos and devastation. The area was in ruins, with wandering undead filling the streets.
"Saya, are you sure this is the right place?" Rei asked doubtfully.
"Of course! How could I possibly get it wrong?" Saya retorted, pulling out a map and pointing to the marked location.
"Look, it's right here."
At that moment, Tatsuki spoke. "Saya likely didn't make a mistake. Something must have gone wrong here."
"What? Dad! Mom!" Saya cried out in panic, leaping out of the vehicle.
Seeing the state of the settlement, she was desperate to find her parents.
"No… I don't believe it!"
Saya was about to rush into the settlement when Tatsuki grabbed her firmly.
"Calm down. Rushing in won't help."
"But my mom and dad…"
"Tatsuki, there's gunfire over there." Exusiai suddenly pointed in a direction, and the group immediately rushed over.
"Mom!"
Takagi Saya spotted her mother, Takagi Yuriko. The settlement had been overrun by waves of the undead. Her father, Takagi Souichiro, had been killed. Yuriko had managed to escape but was now surrounded by a horde of the undead.
Ratatatat!
The last burst of her bullets emptied the magazine. Yuriko threw her firearm to the ground, her face pale with despair.
"Is this it? Am I going to die here…"
Overwhelmed with hopelessness, she collapsed to the ground, utterly exhausted.
"Mom!"
It was her daughter's voice—was it an illusion born of dying thoughts?
Yuriko feebly raised her head and saw a tall figure standing resolutely before her.
It wasn't one of the undead.
He extended his hand.
The ground shifted as black, viscous fluid writhed like living water, flowing outward and enveloping everything around them.
Zzzt!
Dark lightning erupted in a brilliant flash. The undead crumbled as though they were mere shadows blown away by the wind.
The horrifying horde was gone in an instant.
