American Tax Officer

Chapter 264: Getting the USB Drive, The Self-Righteous Bigwigs_3

A group of people disembarked from the Daylight, walked out of the train station, and even got into their cars without any of the scenes they had imagined or any sort of incident occurring; the operation could be described as very smooth.

Back at the bureau, David took Maggie directly to the office, and the already curious Nisen Bakesimmons and others naturally followed, wanting to see if the USB drive was real.

Under the watchful eyes of everyone, David inserted it into the computer, and a file folder popped up instantly, but a password prompt appeared at the same time.

He entered the password Maggie had given, and immediately, the folder was filled with subfolders classified by different names.

As the mouse scrolled down, everyone's faces showed a growing look of shock.

They all knew there had to be a substantial number of high-ranking officials connected to Lolita Island, but they hadn't expected to see well over a thousand individuals.

Among these individuals, there were not only current or former Senators and Congressmen but also renowned figures from major families and conglomerates, including quite a few foreign dignitaries.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk, what a big deal, truly a big deal. On the surface, these people seem all prim and proper, but who would've thought every single one of them is a VIP guest of Lolita Island."

Nisen couldn't stop himself from clicking his tongue in amazement, as there were far too many familiar names in the notes attached to these folders.

"Wait a minute..."

Bucky seemed to have found something, he quickly interrupted David's scrolling and pointed to one of the subfolders: "Ward Fay, Hao Jin's here too?"

David and the others fixed their eyes on the screen, and sure enough, among the thousands of subfolders, there was indeed one that belonged to Mr. Hao.

"What the hell, why is he sticking his nose in this mess?"

The group was speechless; while it could be understandable for others to visit the island, Hao Jin's situation was common knowledge, making this akin to sending a eunuch to a brothel.

"Come on, let's witness the ugly side of these high society figures..."

David's voice carried a hint of amusement, and he proceeded to open the folder, followed by checking the contents of the other people's folders for a while.

An hour later, after viewing dozens of folders, everyone from David to the others from the Lake District Sub-Bureau Branch had an unmistakable twitch at the corners of their mouths.

"These damn scumbags!"

They were appalled by the videos and records within, which shattered their sense of decency. However, the authenticity of the drive was now confirmed beyond a doubt; it was indeed real.

For assurance, David examined the USB drive carefully once more, and just as Maggie had said, it was set up with a special program that allowed no duplication or copying of any data; only then did he relax.

"Now that the item has been verified, where would you like to go, back to Bear Country or somewhere else?"

David wasn't someone who lacked morals or was cold-hearted; now that the job was done, he was ready to honor his promise.

"Back to Bear Country."

David picked up the phone on the desk and instructed, "Book a ticket to Bear Country..."

Soon after, there was a knock at the door, and Kepel came in and announced, "Director, the ticket is booked, the flight is at 12:10 PM."

"Okay, Miss Maggie, why don't you go to the rest area and take a break."

Maggie, knowing her place, didn't say anything more and turned to leave.

Once she was gone, David turned to the three men and asked, "What do you think of this information?"

"If even a tiny bit of this gets out, it could cause a huge uproar, not just in America but all over the world. We've got to be careful how we use this!"

"This could greatly benefit us, but Simmons is right, we must use it cautiously."

"The time isn't right yet; we've got to keep this locked up for now!"

The three were well aware of the power of what they had and expressed their opinions with great caution.

"You're right, and that matches my own thoughts. But you also need to be careful and not let a word of this slip out."

These men had been with him from the Lake District Sub-Bureau Branch up to now and were profoundly loyal confidants; this was why David had allowed them to view the contents of the USB drive.

But as much as he trusted them, he still felt the need to remind them to be vigilant.

"Don't worry, Director, we know how to handle this."

The three shared a bond of mutual fortune and misfortune with David and clearly knew what could be disclosed and what could not.

11:00 AM.

There was a knock on the office door, and Maggie entered. She looked at David with a hint of resentment and said, "Director David, I'm leaving."

"Sorry I can't personally see you off."

The airport was too bustling, and David feared personally seeing her off might attract attention from certain parties, potentially causing unnecessary trouble, so he preferred not to go if he could avoid it.

"Fine, I understand... can I have a hug?"

"Of course..."

David, ever the gentleman, rose to his feet and opened his arms. However, he had thought it would be a simple hug, but he soon realized he was too naive.

Despite repeatedly stating it was an office, he couldn't resist the 'irrefutable insistence' of Maggie and surrendered once more.

After a long while, the office regained its calm. David glanced at his watch and said, "It's 11:40 now, hurry up or you'll miss your flight."

"Goodbye, David, I'll miss you."

Maggie straightened her disheveled hair, gave David a lingering look with reluctance, and finally left the office.
