Chapter 515: 515. Joining the Overseers.

Hearing Alex's question, Emma fell silent for a moment. Perhaps she hadn't expected him to bring up this topic so suddenly.

After a brief pause, Emma chuckled softly.

"Red Skull did indeed invite me to help him, and I actually went. To be honest, at the time, I seriously considered helping him. After all, I didn't dare gamble with the future of mutants.

I don't know if you've looked into it, but ever since Magneto was killed by cunning humans, mutants have faced retribution from many quarters. Even Red Skull has been secretly suppressing the survival of mutants.

To protect my people, I entered into an alliance with Doctor Doom through marriage and secured his support. Only then was I able to carve out a small haven for mutants in the Wasteland.

But it wasn't enough. I wasn't sure if anyone in the Wasteland could overthrow Red Skull's rule. If you failed and the mutants didn't take sides, do you know what the consequences would have been?"

"I understand. Red Skull wouldn't have spared you," Alex said gravely.

"Exactly. He wouldn't have spared us. Even with Doctor Doom's support, he would have gone after the mutants—or rather, he had already started doing so."

Emma turned her gaze to the sunset outside the window, her expression filled with sorrow.

"Forty years. In that time, the number of mutants has dwindled to double digits and continues to decline. And on Earth, no new mutants have been born. Do you know how painful that is for us?

At first, I thought it was just a cruel joke by nature. People used to say that mutants were the next step in human evolution, but I dismissed that as a joke.

Evolution? No, we were just another stage of life. At one point, I believed mutants would end with our generation—until you overthrew Hydra and made all their secrets public."

As Emma spoke, Alex listened without interrupting.

Revealing Hydra's secrets hadn't been Alex's doing but rather Blood Baron's betrayal at the most critical moment.

When Blood Baron realized Alex had gained the upper hand and Red Skull's defeat was inevitable, he decisively switched sides and used Hydra's network to attack the sinking ship.

Among the information Hydra had hoarded, much of it detailed human experiments conducted at their bases and their oppressive control over the population.

The most critical revelation was their use of chemical compounds to contaminate food supplies, suppressing the birth of mutant genes. Anyone who consumed these tainted foods would no longer produce offspring carrying the positive mutant gene.

These foods were especially harmful to mutants, destabilizing their abilities over time. Mutants who consumed such food for years found their powers increasingly erratic.

Wolverine's healing factor, Emma's diamond form—nearly every mutant's abilities had been subtly affected. This systematic suppression had driven mutants to their current state of decline.

"I owe you my thanks, Alex. Truly. If not for you, mutants might have been wiped off the face of this world. You saved my people," Emma said earnestly, shifting her gaze to Alex.

"Don't say that. It wasn't my effort alone," Alex replied, stepping closer to Emma.

"I mean it. I know my condition well. All these years, I've only been holding on by sheer willpower. Now that I've seen a glimmer of hope for mutants and can return to the school, I have no regrets."

Emma fixed her eyes on Alex. "From here on, I'll leave it to you."

Seeing Emma like this, Alex shook his head slightly.

"Do you really intend to abandon these students? Logan isn't someone suited to being a school principal. Luthor has sent me countless complaints about him. Without you keeping things in check, I wouldn't feel at ease."

Emma gave a bitter smile at his words. "I've fulfilled my purpose. If I keep pushing on, I'll only drag them down. I don't want to become a burden to the students."

"Don't worry, I'll take care of this," Alex said confidently.

Hearing this, Emma froze for a moment. A glimmer of hope seemed to flash in her eyes, but it quickly faded again.

"It's no use. I know my body. My life is at its end; the flame of my existence is about to extinguish. Even Raven can't do anything about it. Even the gods have lifespans—how could I possibly escape this fate?"

"Lifespan is merely a limitation within the universe," Alex replied with a smile. "If you step out of this timeline and let time flow within your body, then you naturally won't have to worry about such limits."

Alex's lips curled into a grin. "Don't forget, that old wolf Logan managed to regain his youth overnight. If I could change him, I can certainly change you too."

"Really?!" Emma's eyes widened as she stared at Alex in disbelief.

She had never considered the possibility of transcending life and death. While she thought beings like Alex, who seemed godlike, wouldn't have concerns about mortality, the idea of regaining her youth was beyond anything she had dared to imagine.

Emma didn't know much about Logan's situation. When Logan had been persuaded out of retirement by Star-Lord and Barton, Emma was still at the mutant camp.

The two only met later when Luthor was rebuilding the Wasteland. At the time, Luthor wanted someone to handle mutant-related matters, and on Barton's recommendation, he sought out Wolverine, leaving mutants to handle their own issues.

In fact, Emma and Wolverine hadn't seen each other in ages. Occasionally, she'd hear rumors, but that was it.

So, when Emma saw Wolverine, she envied how Logan still maintained his youthful appearance. However, she hadn't thought much about it since it was no secret that Logan had a prolonged lifespan.

Now, hearing Alex's words, Emma realized that Logan hadn't always retained his youthful appearance—it was Alex's intervention that had restored him to his prime.

"I… I can really regain my youth?!" Emma's voice trembled as she asked.

"Of course. Members of the Overseers are immune to the erosion of time. As for rejuvenation, I believe Tony Stark's new technology can help us resolve that issue," Alex replied with a smile.

Alex's primary reason for coming to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was to find the White Queen, Emma Frost.

After learning that mutants in the Wasteland might have a chance to thrive again, Alex decided to preserve the older generation of X-Men.

Logan alone wasn't enough. Until the younger generation matured, the surviving elder mutants of the Wasteland had to protect the children and give them a chance to grow.

For this reason, Alex had the idea of bringing Emma Frost into the Overseers.

As Emma herself had said, her life was nearing its end. Years of tension and stress had kept her going, but now that Xavier's School had been rebuilt, the string holding her together had snapped.

With her willpower waning, Emma's life force began to drain rapidly. If Alex had arrived any later, he might have only made it in time for her funeral.

"I… I don't even know what to say," Emma stammered, her trembling hand reaching out. Alex quickly stepped forward to grasp it.

Her hand looked smooth and pale, but when Alex touched it, he could feel only the thin layer of skin stretched over bone.

"How about saying, 'I'm glad to join the Overseers'?" Alex gently patted Emma's hand, his heart feeling a bit lighter.

A moment ago, he had worried that Emma might faint from the emotional shock, which would have been troublesome. But now it seemed that Emma, who had weathered countless storms, had a stronger mental fortitude than he had thought.

Feeling the warmth of Alex's hand, Emma opened her mind and revealed her true self to him.

"I'm glad to join the Overseers," she said softly.
