Chapter 167: Crossing the Six Realms Gate
Behind the door, there was nothing, an empty warehouse appeared before him, the white light emitted from the Teleportation Portal illuminating the clutter-filled floor of the storeroom. Besides the old, broken miscellaneous items, not even a mouse was to be found, let alone a formidable Demon Clan BOSS.
Zhang Yaoyang was stunned. He had envisioned many outcomes, perhaps it would be a squad of enhanced Demon Clan soldiers, or a domineering-looking Demon Clan BOSS, or even a fierce Demon Beast. However, he had never imagined it would be so utterly empty, so tranquil.
Could it be that the Demon Clan had already retreated back to their world? Wasn't that a bit too hasty for an invasion?
He really couldn't imagine that the forces the Qilin Group had taken down and those that infiltrated the building were all the main forces the Demon Clan could muster. If that were truly the case, let alone invading this world, it would be good enough if they weren't invaded themselves.
"There's definitely something fishy about this," he thought to himself, when suddenly someone nudged him from behind. It was Wu Tao and Du Yibo squeezing through, looking curiously into the warehouse.
"Huh, why is it empty?" Wu Tao couldn't help but exclaim, drawing even more attention. Everyone peeked inside through the door, finding the outcome quite astonishing.
"Indeed,"
Zhang Yaoyang said with a wry smile, stepping forward into the warehouse.
"Wait a minute!" Bai Yunfei suddenly shouted, reminding, "Maybe they are using Stealth."
Zhang Yaoyang was startled by the comment. Right, what if it was a large group of stealth-using Demon Clan? Frightened, he hastily took a couple of steps back and glanced at the people behind him. However, Hua Yueying stepped forward, "Heavenly Eye Skills—Activate!"
A golden eye made of light suddenly emerged on her forehead, a beam of golden light shooting out from that golden eye and sweeping across the warehouse. The golden eye quickly vanished and Hua Yueying shook her head, indicating indeed it was empty. The crowd then streamed in one after another, feeling puzzled about the absence of Demon Clan but were soon drawn to the Teleportation Portal.
Built from Obsidian, the arch-shaped portal emitted a strange white light, continuously rotating like a vortex, resembling a sci-fi movie's wormhole or the Dark Portal from World of Warcraft, only much smaller, inherently enticing with its bizarre allure.
Is this the Teleportation Portal? The entrance to the game world, but how does this thing even work? Could there be any danger?
These thoughts jumbled in everyone's minds, compelling each to question their own courage to step through such a door.
Yaoyao was rummaging through the miscellaneous items on the ground, and after a while, she approached Zhang Yaoyang, "Leader, the Demon Clan were indeed here, but it seems they've all left."
Zhang Yaoyang nodded. The whereabouts of the Demon Clan were now a mystery, but this didn't deter his resolve.
"All right, let's get moving," Zhang Yaoyang said, turning to look at the group, "The Teleportation Portal is right here, and luckily for us, it seems the Demon Clan have already left. This conveniently facilitates our mission. Has everyone made up their minds?"
Seeing no one speak up, Zhang Yaoyang took their silence as a mix of apprehension and agreement, then said, "Now I need a volunteer to stay behind and destroy the Teleportation Portal after we've successfully teleported. After all, none of us wants to be chased down, right?"
Suddenly, Du Yibo said, "I'll do it."
"Are you sure?" Zhang Yaoyang asked hesitantly, looking at him. "How will you manage to escape afterward?"
"I have my ways," Du Yibo said indifferently. He had been very curious about the Teleportation Portal, but whether to go into the game world was still something he couldn't completely grasp. He thought he'd made up his mind, but when he found the warehouse empty of Demon Clan, an ominous feeling suddenly surfaced in his heart. Read latest stories on My Virtual Library Empire
The door's other side filled him with a vague sense of dread, so he spoke up immediately upon hearing Zhang Yaoyang.
"Fine, then you'll take on this task. So, who wants to be the first one to go through?" he said, glancing at the crowd, who still remained silent, each adhering to the wise tradition of not sticking their necks out first, silent as always.
Grinding his teeth, Zhang Yaoyang decided, "Then I shall be the first to volunteer. I'll go in!" After saying that, he walked up the stone steps to the entrance of the Teleportation Portal, paused for a moment at the entrance, and then stepped inside.
Zhang Yaoyang's figure instantly vanished in the vortex as if sucked away by an invisible force. Some unrest stirred in the crowd, and after a brief pause, Liu Xing stepped forward and leaped into the Teleportation Portal.
"Screw it, the sooner dead, the sooner reborn. I'll go ahead then, brothers," Wu Tao said, following suit. One by one, people walked into the Teleportation Portal and disappeared into the swirling entrance.
Finally, the last person also stepped in, leaving only Bai Yunfei and Du Yibo behind. Bai Yunfei was staring at the door but froze there until Du Yibo patted his shoulder, jolting him back to reality.
Full of curiosity, Du Yibo asked, "What's wrong?"
Bai Yunfei replied indifferently, "Nothing much, it's just that suddenly I don't feel like going in. It seems like something unpleasant is waiting for me inside."
A shiver ran down Du Yibo's spine; he wasn't the only one who had this thought. "What do you think it is? The Demon Clan? Or maybe people from the Qilin Group?"
Bai Yunfei shook his head, "No, I think it's something much more terrifying than that."
Just when Du Yibo thought Bai Yunfei was going to give up, he suddenly chuckled meaninglessly, "Heh, maybe it's just my imagination, after all. People are always afraid of the unknown, right?" He seemed to be reassuring himself, and without waiting for Du Yibo to answer, he had already stepped forward and walked inside.
Bai Yunfei's figure silently vanished into the vortex and disappeared.
Looking around at the empty warehouse, Du Yibo was suddenly struck by an illusion; that vortex-like entrance looked like a gaping mouth ready to devour humans. The more he looked at it, the more it hurt his eyes. He couldn't explain why, but he felt a sense of relief. "Then let me destroy you," he muttered to the Teleportation Portal.
A fireball gradually formed in his hand, and at the moment the temperature of the flames reached the critical point, he hurled the fireball. With a loud boom, the Teleportation Portal was blasted into pieces, the white vortex disappearing, leaving only rubble behind.
After one last glance at the rubble, Du Yibo turned and walked out without a second thought.
Director Qin checked his watch impatiently; nearly half an hour had already passed, and there was no telling what was happening inside the building. They had to act fast. As he was turning around, a squad leader from the assault team approached him.
"Director Qin, the newcomers have been settled in, but are you sure we need to keep them under control? After all, they've only been exposed to that thing for a few days," he said.
Director Qin shook his head, "It's not about how many days they've been exposed to it, it's about whether they've been exposed at all. Every account in this game is valuable. You'll soon understand why."
The squad leader nodded, half understanding, "Oh right, the heavy weaponry has been distributed, and the assault team can move out at any time."
Director Qin nodded, "Good, let's start the operation. Remember, all non-human creatures must be eliminated, without exception."
"Yes, sir!" The squad leader saluted seriously and departed. Shortly after, the fully prepared assault teams charged through the pre-planned entrances into the building.
Well-trained and well-equipped, they not only had various conventional light and heavy weapons but also stun grenades, flashbangs, tear gas, infrared night vision devices, thermal imagers, and other special equipment to deal with enemies that might have special abilities.
Inside the command vehicle, Director Qin was coordinating the actions of the assault teams using monitors and communicators.
As Director Qin was directing the assault teams through the monitor and communicator, a bald man stormed past the blockade and came over, "Hey, hey, withdraw your people now. We had an agreement that we would take care of things here and you would only have the right to monitor, not to interfere with our operations."
Director Qin gave Liu Zijian a cold look, "We indeed had such an agreement, but it was under the condition that we wouldn't attract public attention. Look at the mess you've made; this has completely exceeded the scope of our initial agreement and has drawn attention from all sides. I'm amazed you still have the audacity to lecture me. From now on, we will be taking over everything here."
Liu Zijian laughed in fury, "Don't forget, we know your secrets too, and if I expose them..."
Director Qin couldn't help but scoff, "Don't make threats you can't fulfill; it just makes you look ridiculous. Dugu Han might be foolish enough to do such a thing, but we have confidence in your sanity, so don't try to provoke me with words."
Liu Zijian's expression suddenly turned chilling, "It seems you're really determined, but you'll soon find that the truth is much crueler than you could imagine. You have no idea what you're dealing with."
Having said that, he turned and left. Director Qin was unfazed by Liu Zijian's words. She glanced behind her, where a man in a black trench coat was holding a tub of popcorn, engrossed in watching the battle between the assault team and the Demon Clan on the monitor screens. Director Qin said, "You should go too. This time, we must prevail and figure out exactly what's going on with this game.
We may have to turn against them this time. If we don't figure it out, it'll be a big loss."
"Alright then," the man nodded and reluctantly put down his popcorn, transformed into a whiff of black smoke, and silently drifted away. (To be continued.
