[I'm sorry to interrupt your inner monologue, but I think I should give you the peculiarity you've gained; Don't you think?]
"I'm sorry, I got distracted, but it's impossible not to be distracted after everything that happened today..." – I said.
Apart from Claire and the twins, the day has not gone too well, to begin with, someone have murdered dozens of sheep in a brutal way, then, I was accused by the shepherd who believed that I had committed such an atrocity; then, I got rid of the accusation, but in return my lies were discovered by my father, who wanted to take me back to Florida on the next ship.
[Anyway: Congratulations to the host for completing Mission No. 8, which gives you the following reward: Bullet Immunity (Master)!]
Suddenly, I felt a little freshness run through my body; however, unlike the other times, the freshness was so slight and ephemeral that I almost noticed it; probably because what I received was only one peculiarity.
"Perfect. Now I don't have to be afraid of bullets" – I said excitedly.
The system had previously shown that its peculiarities were completely effective, therefore, and although I cannot verify the effectiveness of this peculiarity, I fervently believe that I am now immune to bullets.
[Yes, but don't be too confident]
"What do you mean by that; Am I not immune to bullets?" – I asked confused.
[You are. But you must remember that the one immune to bullets is only you.]
"I know" – I nodded.
[I'm just reminding you]
"Thank you very much" – I said.
Although really, at the time I didn't understand what he meant by those words.
"Anyway I'll have to wait until the night before I run away" – I said.
The reason for this is simple. If I run away now, someone might see me, and it's even possible that someone was near the beach and saw me fleeing there. I know that this does not influence anything because no normal can enter the loop, but... if by chance they told my father... I would already have a place to look. Also, I don't want anyone to see me run away either, I'd rather do it without anyone knowing, so I'll wait for the generators to shut down and leave.
…
At night.
After waiting a couple of hours or so, night came and the generators shut down completely, plunging Cairnholm into a profound silence. Luckily, I was smart and during this time, I charged my mobile phone. Yes, I know I'm not going to need it wherever I go, but something inside me was telling me that I had to have it fully charged just in case, so I did exactly that.
My father had come to say goodnight a while ago (probably to check that I hadn't escaped) and then left after I answered him. Surely you never thought that I would dare to leave after the generators went out, after all, you can't see anything. But what he never imagined was that this was just what he was going to do.
Now some might ask: How am I going to escape? Through the main door it is impossible because it is closed and even if it were open, it is possible that, by the noise of the stairs, my father would discover me because I have no idea if he is asleep or not, so there was only one option; go out the window.
I'm no expert, but I know how to tie a lot of sheets so I can go down through a window. I could have also used my wind quirk to fly... But I've already found that I can't fly using my quirk (at least for the moment), so I only had that option.
Luckily for me, my bed contained two blankets, one thin and one thicker that could be used. Also, I found another small blanket in the small closet and next to the bed sheet and pillowcase, I formed a large rope that I tied to the leg of the bed, the only place I could tie it to. I hope the bed will hold my weight.
Anyway, after tying the "rope" to the leg of my bed, I slid to the floor very quickly. I didn't want to stay and check for too long whether or not the bed could hold my weight, so I slid to the floor quickly. Luckily, the bed and the improvised rope managed to support the weight of my body and I was able to land on the floor without any scratches and without any curious people who could look at me.
But when I looked around, I sighed. My idea of escaping when the generators went out was pretty good because no one would suspect it, but there was a small problem. In fact, there was not a single light in all of Cairnholm, everything was completely dark, and I could hardly see what was in front of me.
"I'll have to make do with the dim light of the phone" – I sighed.
Unfortunately, this smartphone does not have a Flashlight APP, otherwise, it would not have this problem.
"It's not worth complaining, I'd better get going now" – I said.
With the dim light that the mobile phone could offer me and my memory, I managed to reach the loop with difficulty and crossed it without thinking twice.
Unlike when it was daytime, the orphanage was completely dark, there was no light to illuminate that large building. Probably everyone was already asleep and immersed in their dreams, including Miss Peregrine.
"I'll stay out all night, it's my only option" – I sighed.
The door of the orphanage had a lock and since I didn't have the key to be able to enter, I had no choice but to stay outside, waiting. Although honestly it is better than staying on the other side.
With that, I sat down on one of the steps and began to wait until dawn. Unfortunately, I couldn't sleep because if I did, I could get sick and I don't want to, so I have to stay awake all night. The problem was that my phone didn't work here and I couldn't do anything to distract myself. I couldn't see almost anything in front of me and there was nothing to distract me with.
"I think it's going to be a very hard night" – I sighed.
But I did it too soon, because suddenly, the door of the orphanage opened, revealing a light that dazzled me for a few seconds.
"Mr. Portman. I should love to know why you are here so late; please come in" – said Miss Peregrine.
I don't know how, but Miss Peregrine had noticed my presence. Is it possible that he could feel when a peculiar entered a loop? It's possible.
"Good night and sorry for bothering and waking you up" – I apologized.
It's very late, and I know I should have woken her up, but I had no choice but to come here.
"Don't worry. I'm sure he has his reasons. Come in and let's talk about what has happened to him. I will be happy to hear you" – said Miss Peregrine.
I nodded and entered the warm house, devoid of cold.
"Let's go to the drawing-room," said Miss Peregrine.
I nodded without saying a word, and walked into the drawing-room with Miss Peregrine.
"Sit on the couch. Want a blanket? It must have been quite cold out there" – said Miss Peregrine.
"No, thank you very much. I wasn't out for long" – I said as I sat on the sofa.
"Very good. So, tell me; What has happened to him? He must have a very good reason for coming here so late" – said Miss Peregrine.
"You see, after my grandfather's death, my parents thought I hadn't been able to get over it and took me to a psychologist. Of course I was quite sad, but not enough to have suffered a shock; However, I went so as not to anger my parents, who thought I had gone completely crazy. After many sessions and convincing my parents that I had already improved, I managed to come to this island. However, in order for my father to let me leave the hotel without him accompanying me, he set me a condition. I couldn't be alone at any time in case something happened to me" – I began to explain.
"I see. I think I understand. You told him a little lie or else he could not have come all these days to visit us without raising suspicion. Am I wrong?" – said Miss Peregrine.
"No. That's exactly how it is" – I nodded.
"And I guess, somehow, his father found out that he was lying to him all this time and wants to take him back home. That's why he ran away, that's why he came here at this hour. Am I right?" – said Miss Peregrine.
How sharp this woman is... I like it.
"It's exactly as you said," I nodded.
"… It's a shame and I'm sorry for you, Mr. Portman. I guess I didn't want things to turn out like this" – said Miss Peregrine.
"The plan was to stay with him a little longer and say goodbye properly when the time came. But fate did not want that to happen" – I nodded.
"Fate is very cruel sometimes..." - Miss Peregrine agreed.
We both remained silent for a few seconds.
"Don't worry, Mr. Portman. Since your plans haven't worked out and you've had to flee early, that just means you're coming to live with us early. Although again, I'm sorry that your plans didn't turn out the way you thought," said Miss Peregrine.
"Thank you for being understanding and sorry for waking her up" – I said gratefully.
"There is nothing to be thankful for. Now we are family. Do you remember what I told you earlier about family?" – said Miss Peregrine.
"Yes. That I don't have to thank my family. We do favors and help each other because we love each other" – I said.
"That's right. Therefore, you are not, and never will be, a nuisance. He has done nothing wrong. He was just unlucky" – said Miss Peregrine.
I remained silent, not knowing very well what to say.
"I know that now you see everything a little black, but with time it will improve. Come, I will show you the room I have been preparing for you" – said Miss Peregrine.
"Yes" – I nodded.
I got up from the sofa and as I did so, Miss Peregrine guided me to the room she had prepared for me.
