Chapter 3 - Devil's arena (1)
Sorry, instructor team, sorry Wang Yuan Zhi… sigh, the money spent on him feels like it’s all gone to waste.
Tang Mo Bai closed his eyes, bracing for the end, but he felt no pain at all. Instead, there was a sensation of weightlessness.
As white light reflected in his eyelids, he opened his eyes in confusion and found himself in a strange place.
He checked his body—huh, seems like he’s fine?
【Result: Erasure (Just kidding, haha)】
【Corrected: Trial failed, Explorer status revoked, Revive match starting!】
His head was filled with questions.
“Lost Paradise… are you kidding me?”
“A Revive match?!”
Tang Mo Bai looked around and realized they were in a place resembling a medieval dungeon. Iron bars separated the outside world, and the dim, gloomy, windowless room was poorly lit. He wasn’t alone; there were several others around him, all reacting the same way, disbelief and a sense of survival on their faces. Some even cried tears of relief.
“I’m still alive! I’m still alive!”
“I thought I was dead for sure!”
“There’s a Revive match? Great, I still have a chance!”
“So the trial failure doesn’t mean death? Damn, we’ve been tricked by Lost Paradise!”
【Haha, that’s right, you’re not dead, but I think you’ll end up wishing you were.】
【Yay! My favorite show is starting!】
【I look forward to this every time after an exploration!】
【This batch looks like a bunch of weaklings. So boring, I want to see rivers of blood!】
A show?
Tang Mo Bai was no stranger to the dungeon runs, and he knew about the live stream and bullet comment functions. However, during his last run, his performance had been average, and his live stream audience count wasn’t high.
But for some reason, this time, as soon as he entered the dungeon, the audience count started climbing, even though he hadn’t done anything.
Something was definitely off.
He looked up and observed the others’ reactions. They were all visibly surprised, clearly noticing the rising audience numbers. One tall, muscular man, about 1.8 meters, even flushed red and enthusiastically thanked the viewers, repeatedly urging them to send gifts.
However, no matter how much he begged, the audience remained indifferent, and the audience count kept increasing. The bullet comments grew more numerous, too. Audience count and bullet comments were linked to the streamer’s points, which could be used to purchase items, equipment, or magic in the Demon Mall after the dungeon ended. The more viewers a stream had, the stronger the demon streamers would become—that was the rule.
But up until now, when Tang Mo Bai checked the backend, his points remained at zero.
【Haha, figured it out? In a Revive match, you can’t earn points through the usual methods.】
Some viewers had noticed his lingering gaze and knew he had figured it out.
The bullet comments hurried to let everyone know the current situation.
【Points reset to zero, you should have all received the Explorer status revocation notice. Simply put, you’re no longer recognized by Lost Paradise, so your points are stuck at zero. You’re trash, you’re useless, you’re bugs that anyone can squash. Your only value now is to entertain us with blood-soaked fun.】
【Good luck, you trash!】
The maliciousness of the comments hit them all at once. A flood of insults, mixed with languages and images Tang Mo Bai didn’t understand, filled the screen, many of them filthy and obscene. Though the bullet comments had been unfriendly before, this was something else. It was as if the dirtiest, most vile thoughts of all the viewers were suddenly unleashed and drowned them in a sea of hatred.
At that moment, a trembling voice suddenly called out to him. He turned around in surprise.
The person speaking was a young man of a similar age to him, not particularly good-looking, with tanned skin. When Tang Mo Bai turned his head, the man visibly relaxed, forcing his way through the crowd toward him. “Thank goodness, you’re here. Uh, I mean, at least there’s someone familiar.”
“I’m here too,” Tang Mo Bai replied.
Xiu Wei Yi一 was someone he met in the previous trial dungeon. They weren’t exactly friends, but they were acquaintances who had barely survived the trial. Though it wasn’t the best place to find a familiar face, it did bring some comfort to know there was someone he knew here.
Before they could continue their conversation, the sound of footsteps suddenly echoed outside.
The sound of high-heeled shoes, leather shoes, cloth shoes—multiple, varying footsteps were coming toward them. Everyone instinctively turned their heads toward the iron gate. A group of people dressed in black robes and wearing different ghost masks walked toward them.
But instead of explaining themselves to the newcomers, they merely stood outside the bars, scanning the group, before beginning to discuss amongst themselves.
“Who’s going first?”
“Last time, 019 went first. It should be my turn now.”
“Wait, there’s a girl inside. Don’t fight me for her.”
“Whatever, I just want someone strong.”
After a simple discussion, one of the black-robed figures stepped forward and pointed toward the 1.8-meter-tall muscular man at the back. “You, step forward.”
The man pointed to himself, and the crowd immediately backed off. At least everyone in here had survived a dungeon run, and no one would ask stupid questions—they just wanted to stay as far away from danger as possible.
“Uh, why? Who are you all?”
“Ah!”
The muscular man was suddenly yanked with great force and fell to the feet of the black-robed figure, his body trembling violently as if enduring immense pain. His body convulsed, his eyes rolled back in his head.
“When you first entered, you should have heard the announcement. Since all of your points have been reset, you’ve been stripped of your ‘Explorer’ status. This means everyone here is now a discarded item, and your only value is to provide emotional entertainment for the other demons in the live stream,” the black-robed figure spoke coldly.
“So here’s the question: what is one of the most primitive forms of entertainment for humans?”
Tang Mo Bai was taken aback and instinctively replied, “S-…sex?”
The black-robed figure looked up at him, speechless. “…Well said, I’ll make sure to find you first at the next Silver Party.”
“Aside from that, the thing that can best stimulate a demon’s desires, and also the only way for you to leave here and regain your Explorer status,” the black-robed figure grinned, “is gladiatorial combat.”
【Revive Match: Demon Arena, now open!
Please read the following rules carefully:
The live stream points exchange function is disabled. The live stream is only active from 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. All viewers are prohibited from sending gifts. Please be kind and enjoy the show.
The Demon Mall exchange channel is closed, but a limited number of material exchange channels are open within the Revive Arena, only using the arena’s exclusive currency, ‘Soul Coins.’
One hundred Soul Coins can be exchanged for a ‘Qualified Trial,’ which grants the chance to revive with more than 60 votes. The Qualified Trial can only be held once per day, and only one person can participate at a time.
Voting rights are held only by the living within the arena.
Lights must be lit at night. Nights without lights are dangerous.
Only slaves can participate in the arena. Slave owners must protect their property.
There is a three-day protection period for newcomers. Within these three days, former Revive Match members cannot challenge newcomers to gladiatorial combat.
Death or complete unconsciousness marks the end of a gladiatorial match.】
“Welcome, welcome to the Demon Arena, all you fresh garbage,” the black-robed figure under the hood had most of their face hidden behind a demonic mask, but their crimson eyes gleamed with mockery. “From today, you will forget your past glory. From the moment you step onto this land, you’ve lost your basic humanity.”
“You are all slaves.”
“Understood, understood, you should’ve said so earlier,” the muscular man immediately shifted from anger to flattery, seamlessly changing his expression. “My cheekbones are a bit high. Will it hurt if you step on them? Maybe I should lie on my stomach instead? I’ll relax my muscles; it’ll be much more comfortable for you.”
The others stared at him in shock, and Tang Mo Bai once again felt the difference between newcomers and experienced survivors—this was truly shameless.
The black-robed figure calmly moved their foot, ignoring the man’s servile gestures, and announced, “Now, the ones chosen, come and meet your future masters.”
“You.”
“And you.”
“Little cutie over there, come here~”
As the black-robed figures made their selections, the people in the prison began to dwindle, and Tang Mo Bai and Xiu Wei Yi, who seemed thinner, were left toward the back.
“Hmm…” The black-robed figure who had spoken earlier glanced at the remaining two, seemingly impatient, before finally pointing to him, “You.”
An iron collar appeared around Tang Mo Bai’s neck, and he obediently walked behind the black-robed figure.
“I knew they’d leave me with the leftovers,” the other figure in a ghost mask muttered, then shouted at Xiu Wei Yi一, “Hurry up and get over here.”
Xiu Wei Yi一 shuddered and quickly ran to stand behind him. Tang Mo Bai watched him, but he kept his head down and didn’t meet anyone’s gaze.
The slave selection was complete. There were no pure newcomers; at the very least, everyone had gone through a trial. No one made foolish decisions or humbly volunteered to prove their slave owners’ absolute authority. So, everyone obediently followed.
Black iron shackles appeared on their wrists and ankles, and they were led away like true slaves, only the sound of clinking chains filling the air.
Tang Mo Bai’s gaze remained focused on the bullet comments in the live stream, casually glancing at the IDs. Unfortunately, he still couldn’t see the ID that had been agreed upon with his country. Since the number of comments was limited, they would only send out reminders at crucial moments.
At that moment, the sound of heavy footsteps approached from the other side. He looked up and saw another group approaching them, also led by black-robed figures with ghost masks, followed by a group of slaves with collars—almost the same setup as theirs.
The only difference was their smaller number, but…
Tang Mo Bai straightened his posture, a flicker of vigilance crossing his eyes.
Their gaze had the cold malice and greed of killers.
During the two weeks of special training, combat wasn’t the main focus; instead, they had trained for survival—endurance, awareness of potential threats, and remaining calm in life-or-death situations. Because the task given to him by his country was never to rapidly grow into a powerful force but to survive at all costs.
As long as he was alive, he could have everything. With the country as his backing, he didn’t lack the potential to grow, but the problem was whether he could safely survive the weaker periods.
The malicious and greedy look in the eyes of these people made him feel extremely uncomfortable. His nerves were on high alert.
Soon, the two groups passed by each other. The black-robed figures exchanged no words, but just as one of the men passed in front of him, he suddenly staggered, almost colliding with him.
【Don’t let him knock you down. Don’t let him fall—】
At a critical moment, Tang Mo Bai, amidst the barrage of onlookers’ comments, successfully caught that one discordant sentence and the familiar default ID92673.
It was just a string of illogical numbers, but before entering, he had firmly etched it in his mind, and at this moment, fireworks seemed to explode in his heart.
His body instinctively moved in response to the instructions in the barrage.
During two weeks of special training, he had learned some combat techniques. At the moment the man deliberately lost his balance, Tang Mo Bai took a step forward, side-stepped, and wrapped his arm around the man’s tilting body. The man didn’t expect him to act suddenly, and paused for a moment, but still intentionally lowered his center of gravity, trying to use his weight to force him down.
Was he faking it?
The thought flashed through Tang Mo Bai’s mind, then he quickly lifted his foot and kicked the man’s knee, making him lose balance. Without hesitation, he reached out and lifted the man in a horizontal position.
Yes, it was… a princess carry.
Hmm… why didn’t that perfectly complete the barrage’s hint?
At this moment, it seemed even the frequency of the barrage slowed down.
【Huh?】
【Wait, this is a bit hard to watch】
【Bro, bro, you smell so good—】
Indeed, as the barrage said, if the princess carry were done by a handsome man and a beautiful woman, it would naturally be pleasing to the eye.
But the problem was, while Tang Mo Bai could be considered handsome, the large man in his arms, with his face full of rough features, was far from a beauty.
Even the opposing slave team seemed to slow down, one by one turning their gaze curiously in their direction. Some who recognized the man rushed to mock him without hesitation.
“Hahaha, Manster! How’s the newbie’s embrace? Do you not want to get down now?”
Manster immediately snapped out of it, pushing Tang Mo Bai away. He completely forgot his original intention, clenching his fists.
Tang Mo Bai’s heart tightened, but the expected conflict didn’t occur. Though Manster looked like he wanted to punch him, his chest heaved with anger, in the end, he could only return to his team, giving him a fierce glare. “Kid, you’d better survive tonight.”
Tonight? What did he mean by tonight?
Tang Mo Bai’s mind flashed with this question, but before he could think further, he heard the surprised voice of Xiu Wei Yi from the side: “Tang, your… your skills?”
He turned his head to see Xiu Wei Yi’s unabashed surprise, and not just him, but everyone close by had subtly noticed what happened.
Everyone present wasn’t a newbie. That little incident just now was clearly not an accident. The veteran players were watching closely to see what would happen, and Tang Mo Bai’s counterattack had caught their attention. Even those with combat experience recognized the signs of training he had undergone.
But for Xiu Wei Yi, the shock was even greater.
In the previous dungeon, he hadn’t been like this.
When he first came in, he noticed something had changed about Tang Mo Bai, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was. However, there was no doubt that the move Tang Mo Bai just showed left a deep impression on him.
But why? What had happened in such a short amount of time?
